If you use gmail from gmail.google.com your email is routed and sent by gmail's servers and their server ip address is passed on.
I haven't seen it where your own ip address is passed on going this route. I just tested it again and did not see my ip, only google's ip address.
Now if you send via pop, your ip address could be passed on depending how you setup your pop account.
Regardless, this is an old topic and it seems to pop up once a month and it's getting old. Gmail is safe to use, that's why we recommend it.
I have yet to be linked using gmail, it's pretty safe as long as you follow the recommendations.
