Exclamation Alibris irs, Amazon next?

been using alibris for a while. got this today. think amazon will be next to require this. even small time sellers are affected. any way around this?

Please be aware of the following changes impacting US-based taxpayers
We encourage our Alibris seller community to learn about new Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regulations: all US-based sellers and payment processors that exceed $20,000 in gross sales and 200 sales transactions in a calendar year are now required to file a Form 1099-K with the IRS.

The regulations also require that US-based sellers (regardless of account status and sales volume) have taxpayer identification information on file with Alibris in order for backup withholding not to apply to gross sales.

This means that all US-based Alibris sellers must provide taxpayer identification information to Alibris by December 31, 2011. After that time, non-complying Alibris seller accounts will be suspended until the information is provided. Please login to the secure Seller Hub and click the link for My Taxpayer ID under the Account menu to enter your taxpayer identification information.

We're working hard to help you sell more.
Meet Chuck. He and the entire Client Services team are here to help you via the Seller Hub, by e-mail, or by phone at
510-594-4509.

Taxpayer ID page
Provide your tax ID number on the Taxpayer ID page
• For US-based individuals, your taxpayer identification number is your Social Security number (SSN). If you've obtained a Federal Tax Identification Number for your business, please use that number instead of your SSN.
• For marketplace sellers based in the US, other marketplaces associated with the Seller Hub (Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, Half.com, etc.) may also be required to collect your taxpayer identification information. To protect your identity and confidentiality, Alibris will not share the taxpayer information you provide us with any other entity—not even these associated marketplaces. If you're contacted by anyone seeking this information, make sure that it is a valid site before entering your data. Never provide the information by phone or e-mail.
Alibris will annually provide you with a Form 1099-K, as well as send a copy to the IRS. Learn more about the regulations and Form 1099-K at the IRS Web site.

As with all information you provide via the Seller Hub, your taxpayer identification information is kept confidential and secure.

This is a law required by the IRS. The online sites could care less, but are required to follow the law, which is passed onto the sellers.

Be glad Granny. Ever since 9/11 every single private part of an american's life has been taken away "in order to protect the country from terrorism". Slowly but surely a police state is being set into play.
