Exclamation Guide for doing smooth transactions and not getting scammed

Hi Marketplace Travelers,

A simple guide on how not to get scammed -

1. Do your research on buyer/seller
a) iTrader
b) reputation
c) number of posts on forum
d) quality of posts of forum
e) length of time on forum
f) Who do they know on the forum (do you trust them)

2. Research the market for the proposed business/item
a) When looking at an advertised item compare pricing
b) How many other people are selling item/service
c) Are they offering the good/service "too" cheaply

3. Beware of vagueness and incredible claims
a) Ensure that the text of the good/service for sale is concise and you know exactly what you are getting for your £££
b) If it sounds too good, it probably is (use your own judgment)

4. Payment
a) Agree exact terms of payment before bidding/completing contract
* price
* timing of payments
* method
b) Use your credit card to make purchases. Never wire transfer - be extremely careful around direct banking transactions to pay for goods (read as don't do it)

5. Don't come across as desperate - scammers work on the principle of catching you out

6. Don't get carried away in the excitement of winning an auction. This will blur your head and you might miss something

7. Always post feedback using the iTrader system.

8. Use your common sense (which I know you have in abundance, but sometimes neglect to use it!)

Happy Trading
Aspkin

is there any items (other than the obvious, e.g. illegal, counterfeit) that are not permitted?

Either use credit card(clears immediately) or bank checking account(takes many days to clear) funding the PayPal payment, don't use cash balance in paypal account to fund the payment, there are options of funding methods when making paypal payment. Never money order. If the item never arrives, or not as described, or not happy with the item or seller, or finds out it is scam, simply file credit card chargeback, and also file claim with PayPal, this will usually ends in your favor and get your money back from CC or PP. If funded with bank checking account, simply tell your bank to reverse the payment, they will usually do it without much questioning, 9 out of 10 times the bank will reverse the payment, PP can't do anything about it, you don't even return the item.

suspended2008 I've heard of some people saying the bank won't reverse it like when PayPal would drain people's bank accounts or run them up $2000 in NSF charges.

The buyer could simply says it was unauthorized payment.
Bank may charge the client a fee for cancelling or reversing the payment though. I sold close to 100,000 tangible items on ebay, sometimes got bank payment reversals, maybe 1 out of 1,000 transactions, could not do anything about that, not even pp. However, seller is protected by pp policy if there was a shipping track number and shipped to confirmed address.

Has anyone successfully purchased wholesale goods using Western Union from another country outside the USA such as Europe or Asia?

Please don't use your IM-speak here - it's annoying. We're adults and we talk like adults.

Life is risky. Don't move and nobody will get hurt.

If you don't want your customers to suffer or get cheated, don't sell ⊗⊗⊗⊗. Buy merchandise from legitimate vendors. Research is key.

If you want a high-level overview of what you should do to correctly create new eBay/PP accounts, check this out.

If you want more detail, I seriously recommend you purchase the eBay Stealth ebook.

so I don't understand why you shouldn't use your paypal cash balance when ordering from a new supplier? Whats the difference? Either way its paypal, if something goes wrong with the transaction I should be able to get my money back, right?

nO THIS IS ERRONEOUS THINKING. Dont trust paypal for nothing, unles your buying from eBay. I bought an unlocking service for the 3gs Iphones when the baseband 5.11.07 3.1 OS system Iphones in october before geohot had succesfully unlocked the first one, meaning the seller sold me something that didnt exist yet. I received instructions on how to unlock a 2g phone. I explained this to paypal and they responded that they couldnt refund my money because...what was it....cause they...well I forgot but they gave me some whack paypal explanation....oh ok i remember, that they could not refund me in case of quality was less than what I expected... which wasnt the case at all. I received something totally different than what was described.

Just a heads up about using paypal to buy items that you are going to resale. Especially from a place like DHGate. Paypal knows DHGate sells ⊗⊗⊗⊗ stuff and they WILL put a limitation or a rolling reserve on your paypal account. This happened to several of my friends as soon as they bought things from DHGate out of the same paypal that they used to get payments from the items they sold on ebay. If you are going to buy from someone over seas, I would recommend using a separate paypal account to purchase from.

That's what I'll be doing from now on.

I had a feeling that using the same paypal account for dhgate as ebay, would end in tears.

You can still get away with it if you take it slow, Ive done it myself before when I was broke and had a paypal with over 20 dsr's it's a good way to get money when you don't have any, dropshipping that is, but once you get some money then it's much better to use a seperate account, because you wont be able to do that for too long before you get limited. The last time I did that I was able to dropship close to 30 box sets before I got limited and used the same paypal to purchase from.

I haven't used dropshipping, I like to have the product so I can check packaging and quality before I send them off to customers. I've had issues with breakages, but my supplier is really good about replacing them. I'd prefer they weren't broken in the first place though.
I have 2 perfectly good paypal accounts that are linked to ebay suspended accounts. I still sell some items, but not on ebay obviously, so they are still getting used and I'll keep them for purchasing as well.
