Default Low risk refund method for 300$ item??

I've agreed to refund my customer due to a faulty part on the item malfunctioning.

I've refunded a few times by sending the funds back to the buyer as a gift through papal without problems.

The item in question is 300$. I can care less about the buyer returning the item, he can keep it. I care to much about my stealth. I've had it nearly 4 years.

I'm afraid to to send a large amount as a gift. Not because I dont trust the buyer who's requesting the return/refund,( he has been really patient waiting for my return instructions), I don't want to set any flags and I sure don't want my eb to take a defect hit for the refund.

What can i do?

Thanks in advance!!

You should never be sending refunds via gift payments. What you're supposed to do is go to the transaction details for the original purchase and click "issue a refund." When you click that you will be asked how much of the payment you want to refund. If the buyer purchased without a Paypal account, you will only be able to issue a full refund. Assuming your buyer has an account, you would enter $300 for the refund amount. Paypal automatically refunds the fees they charged you for $300 so the buyer gets exactly $300.

This defect rate does not affect anything, so if you are getting reasonable number of refunds, you will be 100% safe.

No, that's not right. You do not get any sort of defect for sending a customer a refund.

If you refund the money from the original transaction through PayPal but not through eBay it shouldn't count against you at all. That's what I have always done. Either that or cancel the transaction through eBay's resolution center but say that it was by request of the buyer.

Exactly. Ive used the 'buyer cancels' option few times. Anyways i was able to refund from ppal the full amount.

Let's see if they send the item back to the address i gave them thru email.

Again, thankyou everyone, for all your help!

The new rules only defect you for unresolved issues (aka: your fault with arbitration of ebay customer service) or not being able to fill the item ( no inventory available).

If you encounter a problem on refund like a glitch, I would only at a last resort refund and PAY the fee. Also, document in the note the transction the payment is sen for. You should not encounter this, as a case would be filed and you can just agree to refund as members have stated above.

Never send such amounts as gift payments. You will raise a lot of flags eventually and they will then start investigating into each and every gift transaction you made. This happened to one of my friends too.

A simple 'Issue a refund' from Paypal will suffice.

make sure you refund it properly as if you DO NOT refund him (the correct way so eBay detects the refund) you WILL get an eBay Strike.
eBay understands things happen and returns are Ok - eBay doe NOT like it when you don;t refund someone when the buyer goes through eBay and does an return request.
If the buyer as NOT done a eBay refund request and just has messaged you you still refund via paypal or what ever way the buyer paid - that way the buyer CANNOT do a refund request via eBay later as you have already refunded him.
hope this makes sense
