Default America Online AOL dial up for Macintosh users

Anyone here use AOL dial up with MAC OSX?

They did just release a new AOL Desktop version 1.2 in 2008 for OSX.

I used it today for the first time, no problem. I didn't even know I had an AOL dial up account but I guess I must. I have to disconnect the ethernet cable and Turn Airport Off on the computer, because otherwise no matter how i set the AOL log in, it always reverts to back door broadband access and then of course the IP address remains the same as always since it is not accessing via dial up.

Anyway, I used it today for about an hour no problems. I logged out and logged back in, different IP address both times.

I am using it with my Apple external USB modem. Again, worked fine for an hour or so today, and I have not changed any settings, so wonder what is wrong.

Sequence of events:

Dialing AOL (XXX-XXXX)...
Negotiating Link
Authenticating
Negotiating Network
Connected at (XXX-XXXX)....

I hear the WELCOME but then get these two errors, one after the other:

1. TCP/IP Connection Failure
AOL Desktop failed to connect top AOL using your existing internet connection.

Failure Reason
none listed - [Blank]

2. Unable to establish an IM session

An error occurred when connecting to the AIM service. You can still browse and check mail, but you are not signed in to AIM.

Then I hear the word GOODBYE about ten times in a row!

At no point do I have any internet access so the second error is especially nonsensical.

I mean mebbe I just have to cough up the $9.95 for a month of dial up, but if that were all there is to it, why did it let me stay on so long today?

Can't help but do have a question. I take it you specifically want to use AOL dial-up as opposed to broadband. I use the AOL 9.0 vr broadband which gives proxy ips.

Would there be any greater safety in AOL dial-up?

If you use AOL's OWN broadband, then yes your IP will be whatever IP AOL assigns you. Does it change every time you log in and out? Apparenty not. Will you share the same IP address with many others? Apparently so.

If you use your own ISP + AOL for backdoor FREE access only, then you will get whatever IP address your ISP assigns you and there is zero benefit to using AOL.

I already have my own ISP but am using its IP address for a different EBAY account. I am exploring using AOL dial up for other EBAY accounts.

There is some greater safety to using dial up if you fall into certain categories of EBAY / PayPal users. As a matter of fact, if you fall into that category your only choice IS dial up. I will not elaborate further on the forums.

Modee - Thanks for the response. I was concerned about this: "If you use your own ISP + AOL for backdoor FREE access only, then you will get whatever IP address your ISP assigns you and there is zero benefit to using AOL."

I use several free AOL accounts over wireless modem high speed "Broadband (cable/DSL/ISP) in Mexico. I have just rechecked on this using several different IP finders. On the one AOL 9.1 account it does give my true IP. But on two AOL 9 VR accounts that I use for my eBay accounts, it gives varying, slightly different IPs in Santa Monica, CA. These are in separate XP user accounts.

Since I don't use the 9.1 for eBay, I had never checked it before. I'm now going to look into greater security on the 9 VR accounts.
