There is nothing wrong with your VPS. Linux VPS's CAN function as a desktop environment, just like Windows can. You just have to know how to install it.
My first suggestion would be to switch to Centos 5, preferably the 32 bit version or i386. Yes, there are later versions of Centos, but the desktops tend to work better with this version. I don't know exactly why, but my guess is that it takes less memory.
You didn't mention the specs of your VPS. Like how much memory it has, any burst memory, etc.
