Beaches are made for digging on. You get a bucket and a spade and you dig. It does no harm!
The only wildlife at our beaches are the seagulls. They are all on steroids at the beach. Big, mean sea gulls with scars and tattoos. They steal your ice cream if you're not careful.

There is some confusion here, but I won't argue something so stupid. Of course we don't mean digging a tiny hole in the sand is a problem. Don't be a dumb@ss.
I would be so pissed if I found out at the end of the day this was just a public prank! can you imagin all that hard work, possibly investment in a top of the range metal detector only to find its all for nothing.

Time vs chance of reward...I wouldnt spend the whole day...but yes, I can imagine the frustration hah...or if someone just walks by and finds one few feet from you
