No, if you did not declare a higher value, they will not pay out a $500 claim. And the fact is, you ARE responsible for the package.
HOWEVER, don't hit the panic button just yet! This has happened to me a couple of times and when I called and inquired they found the package and delivered it. Something could have happened to the label and they need the address and it is sitting in a corner somewhere. It happens.
And I am sure you are not thrilled with my response about you being responsible for the item. But look at it this way. If you shipped a $500 item to an eBay customer and they wanted to return it and the same thing happened, you would be SCREAMING about not having to take the loss because it was not your fault.
The lesson? Always declare the full value of what you are shipping and pay the couple of extra dollars. Sometimes cheap is dear.
