They know when you apply for another card.. or get a new card. I didn't call them.
Amex did a hard pull request and saw what they needed to see.. that was enough for them.

Its hard but to do it you need long history (8 plus years or so with card) on your credit cards which most of us don't have.
Best way to really boost is to have a car loan or similar lines of credit in addition to credit cards

Best way to really boost is to have a car loan or similar lines of credit in addition to credit cards | One auto is ideal. I have four and it hurts my score a bit. Still A+ but never over 800
7-16% of your total debit being in Real Estate is idea for your Credit score, auto score, and insurance score.
More than 32% CAN have a negative effect however. |

What Aspkin is talking about is a charge card.
You can check your spending power inside of your account and charge cards do not show up on a credit report because they have to be paid off every month unlike a credit card.
Very few companies offer charge cards.

I've had the Costco Amex card before, plus my credit is listed as very good, hopefully they don't give me problems with just that, but you never know. Quote:

Unknown, u said paid off every month unlike a credit card, isn't that a credit card? Unless u mean the sometimes 60 days u can wait to pay it off and the charge card is at best the 31st no matter what.

correct.
on a charge card, you can't just let an open balance sit forever and never pay it off. unlike a credit card.

Oh, well, I guess that's ok with me. I never like accruing debts anyways. But the cool thing that a credit card has is you can make a big purchase right at the closing date of the previous statement, and then you don't have to pay it off for like 55 days. Adequate time to unload your inventory. So for example my due date is on the 9th, closing date is on the 13th. So if I make a big purchase on the 13th, I don't have to pay until the 9th of the second month.
Wonder if Amex charge card can do that.

In the UK we have something called a BA Amex card. Its really the best credit card I have ever used.
£10k credit limit which is more than enough for any day to day along with the odd large purchase. The thing that makes is great is that every year so long as I spend at least £15k on the card I get buy one get one free airline tickets through BA (British Airways)
Very very handy
Only downside of Amex is that its only accepted in about 85% of shops which is a shame
To go to OPs question. I have never called for a raise. Generally I will get them every 3/4 months automatically from the card company without any sort of checks. Does it not work like that in the USA?

Nope, doesn't work like that here James, just tried calling in this morning, says they have to do a credit check. They raised my limits before because I've been with them for so long. I'll try other channels to see if I can get my limits raised. The Amex definetely looks intriguing.

some companies will give automatic raises, but there really is no specific outline that will guarantee you to receive one. just have to use the cards consistently and be a loyal customer.
again, if you want big increases, you will eventually have to take the hard pull. that's not a horrible thing though. just try to avoid having 6 or more within a 6 month period. atfer 2 years, they completely fall off your report.

Amex is known for giving 3x credit limit increases to you if you have been a member for 90 days. If your credit is the same as it was 90 earlier when you got the card and you have made 3 payments on time and kept you utilization below 30% a 5k limit can turn to 15k easy. Also if your credit limit increase request is denied Amex will not hit you with a hard pull. They will only hit you with the hard pull if they award you more credit which is cool as hell to me.

Amex will not grant a credit limit increase if you make a minimum payment of $35 on an outstanding balance of a couple grand. The amount of the payments you make is very important in credit limit increase decisions. Serious payments can get you serious increases. It's sort of like eBay and PayPal accounts, they treat you according to how you behave and conduct your business.

What if you're at 80% utilization but you pay the statement balance on time? So for 9500 limit, got maybe 8000 used up, 6500 dollar statement balance and you pay the 6500 on time? Quote:
