Complicated issue. For future reference, set up a phone before you create a new account, then don't let the phone expire.
You can use a voip phone. However, you probably won't be able to obtain the same number you have already registered with. What you might do is get a new number and explain to PP that your area code got split a while ago and your number has been re-assigned. Or tell them you let the bill lapse for too long and couldn't re-instate your number because it got re-issued to a new customer. That would be your reason for having a new phone.
Best option would be a US phone that forwards to your physical phone. Might be a bit complicated to set up. Might cost a bit of money each time a call is forwarded outside the country.
I won't list any specific names of companies in here, because surely if I do, it would be black-listed within a short time.
