Why is i erase flash cookies, ip address, browser cookies on Ie7 and ebay still acts like it knows me? Whenever I log into a friends account it tells me right off the bat it doesn't reconize my computer but I don't get this message moving from stealth accounts.

and shady one what are you pointing to in that link? Everyone knows about flash, ip, browser cookies. They have to be tracking some how else or when i log into a friends account after following the stealth procedures it asks for information. I'm trying to find a way to hide cpu ids that I think is the key. ALso your SSL certificate number never changes what do you think about that?

Just reformat your HD. That would be easier than buying a new computer to test your theory.
The new user account should do the trick, but if you are serious about trying to erase things that would be the a way to really erase things. There are more secure ways to erase data, beyond reformatting the HD, but hopefully that will work and you won't drive a steam roller over your HD.
You also could just swap HD's with your friend.

You can also download Vmware Player, it's free, all you need is 1 install disc (Windows 7 Ultimate, Xp Pro etc.)which can be used on as many Vm's as you want. The best part is you never have to leave your main desktop just change ip unless you have multiple Static IP's which can be assigned to each Vm then you don't even need to do that.

@OP, use a NEW user account and try to list an item, see if your required to do the phone verification then!
By the way, what are you referring to by "computer ID", where are you finding your computer ID?
If you are referring to your 'Computer Name' then this is certainly not one bit true. IF they did, which they don't, it would be nowhere near accurate enough to be used for verifying you as the account holder. A computer name is local and is not unique.
Also, the fact that eBay asks you to verify yourself when you use a new user account, is that not enough to dismiss the fact they could be tracking your MAC address?

maaaaan, This stuff gets old when someone new just randomly just posts something completely different that what everyone else has been doing and says we are all wrong. what is right??? I am assuming the different users is the key. There are tons of people that buy and sell only using public or shared computers.

@Kingray - lot of info out on the forums - some contradicting, some not. You read whatever you can and take it all with grain of salt. There are some folx around here that I can rely on for quality info. Lot of info you get from trying and testing. Have I made mistakes? Sure - naive mistakes? Sure but as time goes on, you get better and learn what works, what does not. Prob silly to state the obvious but yes, it gets old.

RSOT is right. And the thing is, eBay (and PayPal/Amazon) can implement new security measures at ANY TIME.
If you think they are reading the MAC addresses, then it can't hurt to spoof them. Better safe than sorry.
Sometimes, a new member will get the idea that something no longer works, that one specific thing must be causing them to lose the account. But, when we get more information, it becomes apparent that is was something else that went wrong.
Recently, we had a new member swearing up and down that it HAD TO BE a certain VCC that was causing him to lose accounts. He swore that everything else was new. But then we found out he didn't clear his cookies and listed the same items, etc.
So, I take everything with a grain of salt. If something stops working, it will be proven out soon enough. If new security measures are implemented, they will become known soon enough. That is what the forum is best at. Communicating new information.

what about when ppl sell their machine on - mine was used.
Most my laptops were used when purchased.
I did a bit of research online which involved reading lots of really boring stuff and the only warning i found was for the pentium 3 - so unless yr machine is very old ...
I will say that there are possibly many machine properties that when looked at in their entirity could create a link - which would need further evidence. There are advanced expensive company software solutions that claim they can uniquly identify a pc that eb could at any time implement - so... what can you do.
Its up to the individual at the moment - one pc with multiple acct's seems safe right now, but if you want to be extra careful with your most valuable acc'ts then maybe it's worth investing in new (used) machines.

@NAHB, one computer with multiple user accounts would all share the same MAC address, so spoofing the MAC address on each user account would seperate them accounts. Relate this to what you have to do with IP addresses, when sperating accounts.
And 'spoofing' is a term for changing the MAC address of a device via software. So new machines are not needed.

The amount of information a website can collect is strictly limited without the aids of external program/scripts that runs on your computer. Getting information such as CPU serial numbers is not possible unless a native executable (aka .exe files) is running under kernel mode, which such permission is ungrantable by the system to "browser scripts". Amazon gets your MAC address using javascripts that runs on your computer. If you block javascripts, they can't get your MAC address either (or let you proceed to use the site at all, for that matter). Websites cannot legally install .exe files (or at all, depending on your browser and its configuration) onto your computers without your permission.
So sit back, relax, and have a nice cup of tea/coffee/pepsi/whatever you drink to enjoy your day.
