Default Does this custom fee on furniture import really makes sense?

Waoo so I wanted to buy quite a lot of furniture set from China at a total cost of $2538. The vendor came back with an invoice which will include custom clearance cost of $2676 (Almost 100% of the cost of the goods). Hye! and I havent included the shipping cost of around $400.

I found this to be insanely ludicrous and unbelievable but if its true or near true then I wont be making any purchase at all. Unfortuantely, its my first experience at importing and I would like your expert opinion on this cause I just dont believe it.

I somehow don't think that customs DUTIES are the problem here, although I am not in the UK, so I COULD be wrong.

He uses the language "Customs Clearance Costs" which sounds like a broker's charge to me. And that seems VERY HIGH.

I would ask him directly what the breakdown of customs costs is - how much is for "duties" and how much of the quoted cost is to be paid to a third party.

Never get a chinese supplier to include a quote for shipping, get them to quote you just on their product EXW/FOB and then go to a Chinese or UK forwarder and ask for shipping costs.

Any UK forwarder should be able to tell you how much you will be due to pay in VAT and duties once you tell them the invoice amount and a breakdown of the goods
