A very basic strategy I employ when I wager is to take a fixed percentage out of any winnings and set it aside. That money never gets touched, no matter what. What's left over I can gamble with until it's gone.

Some people think they can always overcome a loss by simply doubling their bet each time until they win it back. This is called the martingale system. This "system" is flawed simply because of the impossibility of winning over the long run, given a limit of the size of bets or a limit in the size of one's bankroll.

The bottom line is most gamblers do not exercise the most basic of money management strategies, or discipline, and that's a recipe for failure.

Yup. My dad and uncle were big time gamblers in the 70s and 80s. So much so, that they would DRIVE from the east coast all the way to Las Vegas, just to play poker. Multiple times.

But they were very different gamblers. One of them did it the right way, allotting a certain amount and only using that. The other one had to either win it all, or lose it all. Lucky for him and his family, he made it out okay.

Did $+125 in 3.5 hours last night. Was at a table with a Vegas pro who I outplayed in one pot. Feels amazing to have progressed to a point where I can feel comfortable playing against very good players. Just one year ago, I remember being intimidated and uncomfortable playing against the same opponent. Hoping this is the start of an exciting journey. More update to come..

My online empire wouldn’t exist without poker helping fund it. Additionally, I am documenting a journey as an attempt to add value to the forum, which is certainly a characteristic you don’t seem to posses. Truthfully, you are easily in the top 5% of disliked people on this forum. Try to add value and encouragement to other forum members, it’s a much more productive way to spend your time and make for a more enjoyable experience.

I'm not gonna lie... I think you have a gambling problem. Your emotions are going to wreck you.

Two things I can guarantee.

1) I am a long term winner
2) I do not have a gambling problem

This is a contradiction on a few different levels.

At least he's being positive.

I have a friend out in California that makes his living from playing poker. He's been doing it for years, and makes many times more money than I ever would. Who am I to judge him?

Of course the day may come eventually where he goes broke. We have seen that play out before.

Yeah, every gambler has big hopes. But as we all know, successful stories are few and far between. :(

Keep in mind there are many differing opinions and points of view on this forum. We don't want you to feel like you are being singled out or picked on. It's just the opinion of a couple here that gambling is not a means to an end. Again, that's their option. If it works for you, you should be proud of your accomplishments. No, I'm not being sarcastic or facetious. That's really what this forum is about, and we all learn something from each other. Thanks for your understanding.

Well for me gambling is a means to an end and not something done for enjoyment. In fact, I would say I am not a big fan of the game (see my first post). The game does allow me make money and thus pass that money into my internet ventures. Is is one aspect of risk taking that I employ with overall business. What is not to like?

The fact that I don't identify with being a poker player and have many other interests outside life allows me to have a strong mental game in poker. I have little ego, appreciate the money, and go home an work on my true passion. I just don't understand the hate. I do not spend a lot of time in casinos.

A lot of it has to do with skill level, especially when you are talking about poker or blackjack.

The house edge in blackjack is around 0.5% if you use basic strategy. Of course, that 0.5% can go up or down based on your skill level. In fact, some "advantage players" can get it down even further with a few techniques that may or may NOT be welcomed by the casino! Card counting, or edge sorting comes to mind among other things. Those "things" can get you kicked out if you are caught.

I don't think its unrealistic to make a modest living playing poker. You just need a LOT of discipline, and dedicate a LOT of time to it to negate any down swings and let the 'luck' element even itself out over time (oh, and be good at it, of course)

I'm interested in reading up on your exploits

I used to help my dad learn his systems when I was little... 35 years ago, or more.

I remember him recalling an entire deck back to me, after I showed him each card... card after card. I don't have that kind of devotion to learn something like that! Nor do I care to play cards with someone that does.

Just smile, I play a game theory style first and foremost, and then I’ll adjust play to make exploits during sessions.

I must emphasize how game theory optimal play is so important. Once GTO is understood, you play with a surreal sense of confidence because you know you are making the +EV play, and thus you could care less the actual outcome of an individual hand.

My best exploit is to watch opponents hands over time while playing with them. I can then classify a player as “loose” or “tight” and that will help me define the range of holdings against an opponent, and ultimately make the best decisions during hands.

An example of this is when you have KK and run into AA preflop. While it is a “cooler”, I can make folds if I know the opponent’s preflop 4-bet range is only KK+. I have folded KK many times preflop and known it to be the right play. I should also add I rarely fold KK preflop.

Another good exploit is known as “baluga theorem”. Essentially, this theorem
says if you bet the turn with top pair and get raised, you should probably fold. Against tight players, USE this exploit 100% of the time. Against good players, you must revert strategy back to game theory. Against aggressive players, you should probably call.

Improving your mental discipline game is also what I consider to be an exploit. While
You have learned to control losing chips due to tilt, our opponents will not have. As a result, when you notice an opponent is on tilt, you will know to get in a hand because he/she will not be at her best.
