Default Will EBAY be asking for a social security #? Rumor

I heard in another post someone (Modee maybe?) said that they heard from someone in ebay that next year ebay will require social security numbers and bank accounts from all sellers in order to sell.

Is this true?

If eBay were to do this, then Google and other competitors will have a chance to succeed.

I don't know..... Americans are pretty dumb. We'll fork over an SS# if it means we can sell that old Vase for $8.

Ah, that's true. But not everyone. Most people I know like to be private with highly sensitive information like a SS#. If eBay were to require this for sellers... then I'd say only half the sellers would be willing to go through with it. And eBay would lose the other half. But then again... if it were ONLY for sellers... then it wouldn't change much for competition. Actually now that I think about it... it probably wouldn't hurt eBay's business at all, only help them get rid of us. Let's keep this on the down low. O,O

But that would affect only US accounts, right? Since no other countries have SSN's. And them not being a bank institution, how could they ask for SSN's? Impossible.

Aspkin, If the SS# went through, how hard would it be to obtain overseas ⊗⊗⊗⊗ eBay accounts but ship within the US. I mean from having the actual eBay account and receiving payments. I guess one would have to obtain a static foreign IP address for starters. Is this even possible....???

i agree. ebay seems to already be a highly trusted website. even if they don't really do anything and it's all person to person transactions, because of the advertising, people trust ebay. i think they would bundle the ssn# in to some kind of promotion or status change at first. like automatic power seller status or something.

Right... the only way around this would be to get a business id, or try to go the ⊗⊗⊗⊗ route.. but it looks like it could be a pain.

As if it were more than a rumor at this point.

I don't think that would happen......and the reason behind this is because, ebay can't 100% stop nigerian hackers and they can't 100% stop people from clicking hacker links...do u understand what it would mean if a person hacked into someones account and obtained there SSN# from another country, actually that would be the fall of ebay as we know it to come to think about it, the site would become the biggest scam infested site on the world wide web. As long as hackers are around you don't have to worry about ebay asking for ssn for accounts.

i remember a rumor that started last year saying ebay was going to require Dl #'s in order to be able to sell on ebay but did it happen no.

Besides that not every person has a Driver lisecens and i maybe wrong but wouldnt ebay have to access the DMV just to verfit a DL number
