AOL email accounts got hacked!

Actually they're my daughters email accounts.
Apparently the hackers are sending emails with links to an online pharmacy to everyone she knows.
They changed the password and her name to something else. She was able to save the second account by changing the password before they did, but not before they sent a bunch of spam.

The question is....how'd they do it?

You don't. They are probably not even in the USA.

Sounds like they have some sort of a keylogger installed on her computer. You might want to wipe the drive clean and start over.

These programs are NASTY! They are hard to find, very difficult to delete, and even if you find it and delete it, it will probably re-install itself when the computer reboots.

Change her email account if possible. aol is not so secure. Even google might be better. Must be the season for this. I just got stung as well.

Double check that your anti-virus program is utd
Block adons etc
Check with your daughter about the sites used. (Dont know her age but have you got parent lock?)
aspkin just got me to use AVG in an effort to fix my troubles. That appears to be working

I just set her up with gmail. I'm going to wipe her hard drive clean and install Kaspersky which has a virtual keyboard as one of it's features.

AOL was no help. The hacker changed all the security words.
I guess its one of those "Lessons Learned" situations.
