Default Google Checkout cracking down? Only if you're a scammer!

Well, it's been a while, and this may not even be current events, but as the wise bard once said "If I ain't seen it, it's news to me!"

Google Checkout appears to now be pulling a Paypal, asking for additional information over the holidays. The crazy thing--they're not discriminating between new accounts and seasoned. Here is a copy of the email being circulated:

"We are unable to verify the account information provided during the signup process. Although you may still accept and charge new orders at this time, you must provide some additional information before you can receive any future payouts. Please note that this account verification process is not related to the bank verification you completed during sign up.

Please photocopy/scan the following documents within five business days:

1. The front and back of the credit or debit card you used to sign up.
For security purposes, please conceal the first 12 digits of your card
number, leaving only the last 4 digits visible.
2. The front of your driver's license. Please ensure it is a clear and
legible copy.
3. Proof of address for each address entered in your Google Checkout
merchant account. Acceptable forms of proof of address include the
following:

-driver's license with matching address
-bank statement
-credit card bill
-water, phone or other utility bill
-business license

4. The original supplier invoices/receipts for the following order(s)

Order # blah blah

The invoices must contain order details and your supplier's phone number.

Write your merchant ID number at the top of these documents, and fax
within five business days to (650) 887-1640, Attn: 'Google Account
Verification.' While we recommend that you fax the documents, if you
prefer, you may also reply to this email with the appropriate attachments.
Please ensure that the copy of the driver license you send us is clear and
legible. To avoid delays, we suggest that you adjust your fax or scanner's
resolution settings. You may also print a test page first to ensure the
copy you send us is clear.

Additionally, we noticed that the bank account you provided for Google
Checkout is related to a virtual money service.

At this time, Google Checkout does not support the use of bank accounts
that are related to virtual money services.

Please update your bank account information with a non-virtual money
services bank account within 10 business days. For instructions on
updating your bank account, please visit
https://checkout.google.com/support/...y?answer=25395.

Failure to send any of the information listed in this email may result in
a delay in payouts. We'll contact you by email again once we've received
and verified your information. If you have any additional questions,
please feel free to respond to this message.

Sincerely,

Steven
The Google Checkout Team

Some of this information is supplied easily enough, but some of this is just vintage Paypal BS that cannot be verified without going to extra expenditures. And with the sort of last quarter year that some of us have been having (financial downturn, property damage, etc) this is not the time for it.

Some of the members here have found a way around this problem but it hasn't been really openly discussed. I understand you may have your reasons, but it does little to help everyone else. I really hope someone will address this issue here, via PM, or in an updated copy of the forum guide, as it relates to really any merchant situation--most notably, the virtual bank problem and the supplier information request.

Thanks for reading

see, thing with google checkout is that... i think they know a million times more about you than paypal.
i have all my email accounts with them, adwords account, adsense, they save all your searching history, they probably scavenge all your emails too, so scamming them id guess would be harder with ⊗⊗⊗⊗ photoshopped info.

whats the reason for not just giving them your correct info? I haven't had this limitation, but I don't use GC that much. Maybe $300 a week.

Speaking of adwords. For every dollar you spend on adwords you get $10 worth of free checkout processing

Ah Chris, I've missed you too. I already have tickets for your new movie on Friday monsieur chipmunk. Supporting GCO full-heartedly now eh? I guess the other perfect payment source you pimped so shamelessly left you asking where's my money?

On to the answers

Aspkin, the company is listed under a business name, which is attached to a sur-name for publishing and business purposes. The card, however is listed under another name--another member of the company. However, this member does not make the financial decisions. I took a cue from Modee and some others with this method and carried this planning over to Google. It seemed to work for them.

In addition, Google is asking for supplier information. I've heard this happening to others, but this is the first time I've been asked. Since we deal with many items no longer being manufactured, this presents a major problem in that we have no supplier for these items. They're just in storage. How am I supposed to provide information that doesn't exist?

And lastly, some of the members here have supported programs like netspend--virtual bank accounts. I tested the waters and found this program to be a little flawed but overall promising (however that assessment has changed, but more on that later) It seemed to work fine with Paypal so I set up the account with Google Checkout. It appears that Google no longer accept Netspend or other virtual banking deposits. AT least, that's what they say. So as I'm waiting for some deposits to complete and for items to be shipped for the holidays, I find myself basically frozen, unable to receive the money and unable to ship the items. And without providing information to GCO that really doesn't even apply to our situation, I don't see that situation changing.

As this just happened to us, I'm sure it will happen to others soon if not already, hence the warning and hope that someone has found an answer to the problem.

Ballsack, did you have to supply all the information that the email asked for in order to receive your payments, and if not how did you get around the requirements? Or was it just a warning email sent out automatically and nothing ever happened to your payouts?

I've gotten over 30 payments so far no problem..

And Jack like I told you before google is a business and they are only trying to protect their business. Google checkout dont know you from a grain of white rice. They are only verifying you to make sure you dont scam.

Once you have alot of money flow through your account Google is more then in their place to ask you for that info. It doesn't make them a bad account because they asked you to verify yourself. maybe they system sense scammers

Bully for you. Although that means nothing really. I've received plenty of payments too. This latest one was for under $200. That's not being a business. That's being anal to the point of surpassing paypal.

And if you're going to play all nice in the forum and then turn round and spam my private mailbox with your sneaky snake face, at least have the decency to brush up on proper English before you come in. You dirtied up the place with your illiterate meanderings.
