When I was very young I had a pet hamster and one day, as is the way of things, it died.
I was completely unconsolable and my mother did everything possible to take me out of my misery. In the end she said that she knew of an old country trick that would preserve 'Hammy' for always.
She placed my poor dead pet in a saucepan with a little water and poured 2lb of sugar over him. She then brought the saucepan to the boil and disolved all the sugar around my dear departed pet.
She told me to wait while the mixture cooled down and then we wnt out into the garden together and dug a hole and poured the mixture into the hole. My mother told me that my poor Hammy would be preserved for ever and I would always know where he was.
The following spring while out in the garden I noticed a huge clump of flowers growing where we had buried Hammy and I ran indoors to drag my mother out into the garden.
I said 'Mummy look - there are daffodils growing where we buried Hammy'
My mother looked very perplexed and turning to me she said. 'This is most unusual. Normally .....
