Default Bought a new laptop, what do you guys think?

It's an HP Pavillion dv7-6c20us paid $837 plus $50 rebate for it.

Specs:
AMD quad core A8-3520m accelerated processor
750GB hard drive
6144mb ddr3 sdram
DVD optical drive
windows 7
17'3 inch diagonal hd brightview les display
wlan

So did I get screwed or what? I know nothing of laptops, not a techie AT ALL neither are any of my friends really. I could have bought another laptop think it was a Toshiba for $600 with same specs only the Toshiba had A6 instead of A8? Anyone know the difference between A4 A6 and A8?

I opened it up and turned it on, my initial reaction is the screen looks blurry...is this suppose to look like this? I'm on my old laptop now and the screen looks clean and smooth, looking at this new laptop screen and unless my eyes are playing tricks on me it looks fuzzy especially when you look at it from a side angle. Is it maybe some hi-tech screen technology I'm not aware of?

The laptop did not come with a plastic cover on the screen either so my paranoia is kicking in and I'm thinking this is not brand new..Don't all new HP laptops come with plastic covers on the screen?

What a downer, jamblix

HP are over priced for lappies. My usage of them has been nightmare material.
Had screen problems of 'stuttering/fluttering. Battery failed.
That's a nice chip. Me likes AMD. :D

Toshiba first made them. My oldest lappie is 7 years & still fine.
Withstands regular coffee washes over the monitor.
Latest netbook is aces. Never failed.

Sure more will comment as well :D

837 for that! You seriously got ripped off. That should be 600 tops.

I'ts great specs - the price ain't too bad i think if it's new, you won't really find this make any cheaper - it's well geared up for gaming

What did you actually get it for gaming/editing software right? i'm presuming you wouldn't pay that much for a laptop which you'll use just to browse/sell.

Not all laptops come with plastic screens though - if you got it from e/b inquire about the plastic lcd protector - sometimes sellers be it in small shops or e/b sell laptops as new when in fact there just refurbished (so they change the parts to brand new parts and and reset the hdd to factory settings)!!

The only thing this laptop is "for gaming" is games on Facebook or games that came out 4 years ago.

The Amd a6 and a8 APUs are not bad processors. They combined the processor and graphics card into one silicone chip. The major problem with the A8, A6, A4 serious, is the lack of processing power vs intel. But they make up for in the graphics chip. The Intel processors can not touch AMD in graphics power. Not even in the next generation Ivy Bridges CPUs can Intel touch AMD now on graphics power only.

The issues you might be having the screen thing is simple. I am sure this model of laptop has a TN screen. TN screens are known to have horrible viewing angles and bad contrast ratios, or how the blacks look to the naked eye. I don't know the percent of laptop that come with TN screen but I have heard it's over 80% of all laptop models.

About the price, I think you kinda over payed for this model.

I won't comment on the HP consumer line of laptops cuz I am tired of commenting on them. Only thing I like about HP is their business line of laptops. I am writing this thread on one right now. But other than that, I have "no comment".

In my opinion, this laptop should have been price around $650 or so. But I have read that it has pretty good speakers. And I am not talking about the over-hyped BEATS AUDIO crap that most people think its good sound, lol.

Overall, it's a good basic laptop that will fit your need for the future.

UPDATE: I went into the store I bought it from and convinced them something was up with the screen...when there really wasn't. Kinda feel like an ass now but, I'm stubborn as hell and I wanted an exchange so I kinda threw a fit and got store credit for the full price.

Anyways I switched laptops and got this one for $20 less:

Dell Inspiron i17RN-4235BK

Specs:
Intel Core i5-2450M Processor with Turbo Boost Technology up to 3.1GHz
6GB memory
500GB hard drive
Intel HD Graphics 3000
Windows 7
17.3-inch HD+ WLED Display with TrueLife (1600 x 900)

Hope it was a good trade, only differences I see is the processor AMD vs. Intel and the graphics card...I'm pretty sure the graphics card on the HP were better. I really liked the HP but, I was just so bummed about the blurry/fuzzy screen man...oh well I like this Dell too using it right now.

hey the hp was a great laptop and yea you overpaid for it just a bit but you got a nice AMD chip which hard to find among all the intel.

The new dell you got is well equipped and I like the fact that the graphic card is separate and is not all in one chip.

Make sure you use that 3.0 USB and Bluetooth on it as they are going to come in handy soon when transferring files from USB or your phone.

I am running on a Dell Inspiron N4010. But had 3 HP laptops for the past 7 years.
