Default Paypal asking for Tax ID

Today I woke up logged into my legit paypal account and they are asking for a US Tax ID number, EIN, or SSN... is it safe to give them my SSN or what do you all recommend.

I only did about 2,800 in sales/205/ items within the past 3 months.. what should I do?

and will they limit my account if I don't add?

also can I still receive payments without them being held?

also what happens after I provide one of they above? (will things go back to normal?

Thanks in Advance

If the account is LEGIT and you have also invoices of where you bought the items, and shipping information as well and the color of the underwear you wore that day then yea sure. But if you do provide your ss remember you are running the risk of having your account limited for any of their 13995338483 reasons and then having to go stealth only.... my advice (from experience with legit accounts) go stealth only....its too risky to have a legit account with a high selling limit on ebay to then have it taken down...its better to have multiple stealth accounts because if one goes you still have your others....

Giving out your personaly is NEVER safe. Some places are safer than othrs to give that info to in paypals case you MUST provide the information they request otherwise you will be unable to continue doing business with them.

Give them what they ask for they are "safe"

If you DONT have invoices from where you bought the items.... DO NOT GIVE THEM ANYTHING..... THAT ACCOUNT WILL BE DEAD SOONER OR LATER, THEY WILL ASK FOR THE INVOICES AND IF YOU CAN'T PROVIDE THAT "ADIOS" SSN FOR EVER.

Paypal is required to ask for tax info at 200 transactions or $20,000 in sales. Sounds like you hit that 200 transaction mark. You can safely give them your SSN if it matches your account info and you have never used it on a previous account.

I'm pretty sure you can only use an EIN with a business account, not premier. Never tried though. You have A LOT of research ahead of you if you want to go this route.

DO NOT give your SSN
DO NOT give your SSN

Do look at giving them the EIN.

Mae sure that EIN has never been used with paypal.

Like newstart2 stated, does the 200/$20k reset after a year?

So then does that EIN not have to match up to the stealth info?

One more time for everyone----

The 200 and 20k is NOT CONCRETE.

It is just a range.

IRS has placed PP in a spot by asking them to get this information on any account that has the POTENTIAL to hit these numbers.

I just got hit with it with a small amount of sales.

Someone incorrectly keeps saying you have to hit both and you do not.

Someone incorrectly keeps saying you have to hit one and you do not.

It was reported here a few months ago by a poster who does not post anymore that she had 150 sales and 12k and got hit with it.

Remember, it is the POTENTIAL for you to hit these numbers.

You can get it with 200 sales, or 20k in sale but you can also get it without hitting those numbers.

Can I get A "Thanks" as well for giving the answer from the beginning as well. This is why I hated school.....( never got the credit I deserved)

Don't give them your ssn...just the EIN..if they say that they want your ssn tell them you are a business...they will leave you alone after that.

Never been asked for invoices. When I created the account the guy asked me where I got my items, and told him half truth, and never been hassled for years.

So I'm under the impression you can register your for an EIN under your real name and business name. Then paypal only gets the EIN and doesn't see the info the gov has.

Definitely need to do a lot of research and planning before taking this route.

Does PP see the real SSN used to get the EIN?
