Default Why does the US still manufacture pennies?

These things are such a waste. I always get pissed off when i get them. Whenever i get them at a store or anywhere i just leave them on the counter of the store or throw them away. Even if you tried to save them it would be a complete waste of time. It's just not worth it. It works pretty good for the marketing illusion by being able to end prices with a .99 but is it really worth it. The penny actually costs more to make than it is actually worth. In my opinion they should just get rid of it and round the prices up by that 1 cent. I don't know why they haven't done this already.....

I've been saying the same thing for a long-ass time. We should also get rid of nickles. We should just keep Dimes and Quarters. What if they made a $0.75 coin?

I only disagree because the penny saved me when I needed food on my mouth.

I saved them in jars out of my families habits for many decades, then forgot about them.

A time came when we were down and out, LITERALLY.

With the little food we had left, I fed my children while my husband and I went to bed hungry. Its not a nice feeling. We were living paycheck to paycheck and the bills were due.

My parents always taught me: Pay your rent first, you can get food from anywhere.
My husband and I were not at the point where we needed to beg for food.

I then remembered that we had the water jugs of pennies in our basement, just collecting dust in the far back.

Cashed them in and had around $325 dollars that I promptly went food shopping with.
Fed us for the rest of the month.

I don't knock them at all.

Its still a legal form of currency plus due to taxes you need to get pennies back or pay pennies on your purchases...

The whole economy would die without a penny. Think of stocks and their price fluctuation

I agree to get rid of Pennies. They cost $2.41 roughly in 2011 to make. Think of how much money they would save by not producing billions of Pennies a year.

Edit: sorry I meant 2.41 cents per penny

The lobbyists for the companies that provide the metals used in manufacturing pennies will not allow it. They make too much money to let the government stop making pennies.

Then the government should exclusively pay them with pennies, that will teach them a lesson.
