Default Paypal Issue - Where do i stand?

Firstly hello everyone.

Basically i would like some advice on where i stand with paypal, heres the story.

I quit an online MMORPG game a few months ago. I knew there was a market for the accounts in the game, so i thought i will sell mine seing as i don't play anymore.

I finally found a buyer, he offered me £250.00GBP for the game account. I accepted and he sent the funds to my paypal account without a problem. I withdrew the money as soon as i could. A month later i found an email, stating that the buyer had filed a chargeback, and a verdict will be recieved within 70 days. Come a week later i had another email, stating that a chargeback had been made and my paypal account was a -£250 balance.

So i thought, ok.. i'll contact the buyer and see whats going on. I managed to get hold of him and he said he used his dads credit card, but he did tell his dad about it, and will sort it out as soon as he can. Well straight after this he logged off and i havn't heard from him for 2 months. The other day i got a phonecall, from a debt collection agency and a women spoke to me saying that there is an outstanding debt of £250 and that i need to put a deposit on it NOW, she asked my credit card/debit card details, upon this i said um, i'm not really sure where i stand on this because i'm only 16(which i am.) She just paused for a while and i asked if she wanted to speak to my mother. She spoke to my mother explained how there was no way i could pay it because i'm in college and don't work, the lady asked do i not even have a part time job, in which my mother replied no.

The lady said she will ring back the following tuesday, but she did not. This morning i got a letter through telling me that i need to pay the £250 immediately.

To sum it up, i'm 16, i was ripped off, now paypal want money from me. Where do i stand?

I thank you for reading this wall of text.

If you didn't add SS # to your Paypal account, you probably don't have to worry about it. If you did, you should pay it if you don't want to ruin your credit at such an early age.

Usually when you get a call from a collection agency they're fishing for more information. You probably already gave them exactly what they need to connect you with the negative balance if they didn't have the information already.

If you gave them a ton of info on you: name, address, other personal information you may have to pay.

If it were me I would pay it, my credit is too important to me. But lets see what other people think.

Thats why I said don't pay it. He is 16, they can't hold him to it. At least not in the US.

When the women rang, she asked for Mr. XXX XXX ( my name ) and i said yes thats me, that was all she got out of me, apart from how i came into the debt.

In the UK you are a minor until the age of 18.

I never gave my Social Security # to any websites.

Marine, isn't a minor under 16? I thought it was anyway. I'm probably wrong though...

I've had both paypal accounts and eBay accounts limited for being under 18 myself, and I believe they will not take any action, because they will not want to face someone under the age of 18 for legal reasons.

Although, they could just wait 2 years, and finish the case then.

I've had chargebacks filed and they really are not nice at all. The sadness is there is nothing you can do about them either.

Alright cheers.

So what do i do about the phonecalls & letter i'm probably going to get in the future? I'm not sure if paypal know i'm not 18, if i told them would they just close my acc and that be the end?

Also where does my mother stand in all this? seing as she is my guardian, can they threaten her and ask her for the money?

If a collection agency called a minor in the US, that's a clear violation of the FCRA and you would be awarded $1000 in small claims.

Right, so should i email paypal telling them that i'm only 16, a minor in the uk?

I don't care about my paypal acc, it had no money on it when the balance went negative.

Also could someone look into what mjstallion said? because i'm sure that must be some sort of violation... they didn't know my age and never asked me for it..so..
