Default For the new people seeking an actual high-profit item to resell...

Every so often there's a new-ish user in this section who asks what are some good, ACTUAL items to resell for a high profit. As crazy of a question as that is to expect an answer to, I've been wanting to ask it a few times myself, as the more time I spend on this site, I realize there are some very successful people making real business out of this, and I would LOVE some insight into how they view the whole process.

So I'll start by offering my perspective on it, so at least there's a little insight to one person's view in this forum.... some reading for the new people with big dreams...

The way I see it, is that there are a lot of things you can buy for $X here and sell for $2X-$4X on Ebay, if you are organized, on top of your business and provide good service. For example (and this is just about as close to a real-life example as you will get in any forum) you can buy a certain "glass bead making" book (not the real subject) on ABE.com for $2 (they are priced from $2-$65 plus minimal shipping- I used to buy the cheapest 5, usually priced under $5 with shipping) and then relist them, one at a time, (one per week) accurately showing all the wear, tear, library marks, stickers, and NICE PICTURE-PEEKS of inside the book. Since it's a rare title, and buyers would rather panic-bid the book up to $25-$55 on Ebay instead of even THINKING about searching elsewhere online, the average sell price (even after Ebay fees) gives about a $20-30 profit.

Now suppose over time and with research you find 50 other titles to do this with, you can make it worth your time to search/buy/ and expand by researching even more titles... All legal, within everyone's rules, and this eliminates a lot of the stresses that come with China/Vero/fak# stuff.

Then there are things on the other end of the spectrum, like the remote control helicopters, if you find a good brand that holds up, you can buy a certain size for $20 each (but you have to buy in quantity) from China, and the average sell price is $60 on Ebay, never less than $50+shipping (this is something I noticed about a year and a half ago, not sure how it is now).

And between those two styles of supply/resell, it's all a sliding scale of how much money you want to invest in stock, how good/fast service you provide your buyers, how many items you can efficiently handle per week, how much individual time you can/want to give to each individual auction (it's easier to relist several times the same auction you make $3 profit on, than to make a custom auction for an item you only make $5 on) and of course a ZILLION other things to factor in. My advice would be to find some things that WORK, and slowly expand in quantity/margin/etc from there... SLOWLY, so you know what you can handle while keeping all your buyers happy.

From here it's all the art of risk and management, where you learn from experience, research, and more experience and research.

RESEARCH ITEMS- you will only find them by accident (as in you need it yourself and cant find a decent seller/product/source) or by research. The amount and quality of your personal research will directly correspond with your success and profit.

PROVIDE FANTASTIC SERVICE on the Ebay end- While even the best product can only be so perfect, the level and speed of good service by a seller can put you ahead of others selling the same thing for the same price. Too many people get ahead of themselves and sell things that havent arrived yet, or that they dont even have money to buy yet, and that lag from the turnaround will hurt you more than help you. Growing too fast is not growing. Trust me, I'm an expert in that area.

Finally, REMEMBER, THE NUMBER OF GOOD IDEAS IS UNLIMITED. TRULY UNLIMITED. New sellers dont realize this, and then come here asking stupid questions like an actual item to resell. Even those of us who have been Ebay'n for a long time forget just how many good new ideas are out there, not yet discovered. There is no fixed number of money making things to resell. Just use your imagination, personal experience, and do TONS OF RESEARCH based on that.

I know there are likely a good bunch of people on this forum who turn around mindblowing quantities of inventory compared to what I do, and the few times someone shared some insight into thier business and numbers, it reminds me that I dont even realize how many successful people are out there. But none of them started out in 5th gear- it's a process and the only thing that can speed it up is hard work and research.

I no longer do the book thing, and you too will find yourself slowly, naturally moving up like a bubble in syrup, once you find something that works, you will naturally be looking for more items to add to the list, or new items that have higher margins or that you can move larger quantities of. Just start with something small, learn how to make it work, and you wont be able to keep yourself from growing.

Brilliant post... I used to be one of those people always asking people many times ago what sells well and what could I sell to make a really good profit... well ive found certain things that sell very well but its crucial to understand that spamming one eBay / PayPal account isnt going to create success as you will be back to square one in no time at all, as some of us know from limitations.

Im making at least 500-600% margin...and I sell the simplest of things... its great when you know how but a tough road when you dont!

Great post, very useful to the beginers and a re education to us that have lost our way a little and need a bit of a kick up the arse. I wish i could give more of an insight to what i do but i`m a bit more of a one trick pony and wouldnt want to harm that. Best of luck to you all out there looking for that one good idea.

Such a well written post. Thank you.
The more I have been reading on here over the days, the more apparent it became that some people must make mega bucks from ebay.

there is little old me before reading on here thinking to myself that my target was to be $40 a day - lol !!

Well I am still at the beginning of the road -But Hats off to you all as it seems to take so much time and organisation !

Man, I still have not worked out what the black ip box thing is -a modem/router/cable thing - static or whatever the other word was ??

But I will get there and I may even reach my target of $40 a day !!!!!!

40.00 today and 400.00 tomorrow.

Keep the positive attitude and aim high.

It will work.
