Since there are hundreds and hundreds of options available I will give you mine. The one I use and have been very happy with is Zen Cart. I build all my sites with it. Most web hosts nowadays have an auto install option for Zen Cart.

free, open source shopping cart software from Zen Cart

It has tons and tons of user created mods so you can tweak it to your hearts content. It will output a Google Base file that you can schedule to be uploaded on a regular basis.

There is a very complete and detailed 400 page manual available that goes into every nook and cranny of setting it up and using the optional mods.

If you wish you could even pay someone from say elance.com a very minimal amount and they could set up the basics for you and create a custom logo/header to boot. Guys in Romania work cheap nowadays.

Once you play around with Zen Cart yourself or any other cart software you will get up to speed quickly. It takes all of 30 seconds or less to add a new product once you know what you are doing. If your products are already in a CSV file you can upload the file and your store will be stocked in 10 seconds.

Yes, you will need a host to install your website on. I use a hostgator baby account that allows you to run many sites for 7.95 a month There are tons of cheap hosting companies out there.

PM me and I'll send you the 400 page manual.

It's like riding a motorcycle, flying a helicopter, tearing apart an engine or scuba diving down to 300 feet. Everyone has to learn how to do it in the beginning.

Any website you set up with any cart system will have a learning curve. Just have to jump in and paddle.

Or pay someone to install it for you and set it up in a basic manner but you will still need to learn the ins and outs of whatever cart software you choose to work with.

The first one is the hardest, then you will make them with your eyes closed.

Right, I still remember my first website. It was just a simple static website, I used notepad to build it. Those were the good O' days.

This stuff goes over my head. All of this seems a bit too hard I'll read about this some online and look into getting into all of this.

Nah it's not so hard. You just need a web host to store your web files and host it to the internet, and then you need a FTP client to connect to your web host so you can upload files, then you files.

I started with an index.html file that said this, "Hello World!". I later learned how to change background colors and text and then create links, etc etc etc. I learned everything from pagetutor.com, it's a great site.

Those first 50 pages of the book spoke of making/creating a test install on your own home computer. Some users do that to test their store before going live.

Most hosts nowadays have an automatic install of zencart and/or other cart systems. You click one button and the whole 9 yards is installed in 3 seconds on your host.

The next 350 pages details the ins and outs of zencart. The real nitty gritty of tweaking it to suit your needs.

You can compare creating a website to changing your own brakepads. Most folks are happy to give up a healthy chunk of change because they think it's complicated. Then on the other hand there are those that change their own pads and save the labor charges of $100-$150 or so.

As suggested above if it is too complicated or sounds too complicated then pay a bright young programmer a couple hundred dollars from elance or rent a coder and he/she will create a brand new spiffy website for you that is pretty much turnkey except for adding any new products. If needed you could even email them the new products and for a price decided in advance they will add them to your website on a month by month basis.

Believe it or not you can hire an overseas programmer for $10 an hour that will deliver you a premade ready to go ecommerce ready website that will blow you away. Your only effort will be to pay him upon completion of the job. All you need to do is point out to the programmer other websites that you like and would like yours to look like and they will take it from there. They have been in the biz a long time and know how to whip them up quickly.

The question is do you want to invest the time to learn to do it yourself or do you want to pay someone else to have it done.

thanks for your time in helping me...

im a do it yourself guy.
i hate paying someone to do a job that i can do ( or atleast think i can do - lol)

the only thing for me is just getting started.

i do have a guy the knows his stuff and i called him today and he said he can hook me up for $80.00?
and teach me in the process so i might just do that.
seems like a good deal to me?
after the first one i know i can do it myself.

again thanks for your time

It's not bad, if he can show you how things work and get you setup, it's a good deal.

It took me forever to get things going when I first started, now it's nothing to me. I'm even using things like putty to run my dedicated server, edit mysql databases, stop and start processes, etc. I love this stuff.
