Us Bank Account in UK Format

Is it possible to use a US bank account in the same form as a UK bank account?
For example in the USA we have a routing number in the UK it is called a "sort code".
If I sign up for a UK account and input my US bank routing number in the sort code field, will it work? I'm asking this because I don't have a UK bank account but I do have a US account.
Has anyone else tried this and succeeded?

Format is specific to each country.

For an international deposit you'd also need an IBAN or SWIFT code and you can't put them on paypal from what I'm aware of.
