Default PP wants my ssn- 2nd request...

So they say they will limit me if I do not provide ssn. My name is on the pp account. I'm sure they have my ssn from years ago when I got banned. Will my wife's (same last name) ssn satisfy them? Thanks for any info.

Are they requesting the SSN for tax reporting purposes, or for identity verification?

If it is for tax reporting purposes, you can get an EIN and provide that. Since the account is in your name, you can just apply for an EIN as an individual (sole proprietor) and your name with match what the IRS has on file for the EIN.

If, however, they are demanding your SSN for identity verification, then that would be more difficult. Providing your wife's SSN will not work, because they match names with the SSN the IRS has on record.

fantem, what will help us if you tell the reasons for the request.

We should be able to tell you a workaround depending on the reasons.

Ok here is what they said...than you for your help--

We still have not received your Tax ID number. Please provide your Tax ID
number to comply with Internal Revenue Service (IRS) rules. Your Tax ID
number is one of these:

- Your Social Security Number (SSN)
- Your Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN)
- Your Employer Identification Number (EIN)

We are required to obtain Tax ID numbers from all online sellers who
receive payments for goods or services through PayPal. If you do not
provide us with your Tax ID number, your account access will be limited,
and you will be unable to request or receive money.

After you provide your Tax ID number, your account will be fully
functional. Here's how to submit your Tax ID number:

1. Log in to your PayPal account.

2. A message will appear asking you to update your information.

3. Click Provide Now and follow the instructions.

If you have multiple PayPal accounts, repeat these steps for each account.

We'll use your Tax ID number to send tax Form 1099-K to you and the IRS
when the payments you receive meet the 1099-K reporting thresholds for the
calendar year. For more information, please see our FAQs on the IRS
reporting requirements: www.paypal.com/irs.

We appreciate your help in complying with these IRS rules.

How many items have you sold since January 1st, 2014? This defeinltely sounds like you are approaching the 200 items threshold.

Either open a company and obtain and EIN or stop using the account.

Is it limited yet?

Since you are using your real name and the account has not been banned, I think you can easily save this account. They are NOT trying to verify your identity, they just need to comply with the IRS reporting rules.

You said you could not use your old SSN because it was banned. That is OK. Get an EIN as a sole proprietor at the IRS website and enter it as an EIN into PayPal. That will satisfy the IRS requirements and make PayPal happy.

The EIN will verify as belonging to you as your real name, which is OK. The IRS won't give them your SSN.

Do this ASAP. It DOES take 2 weeks before your EIN is in the IRS database, but if it does not verify the first time, just try again. It happens all the time.

fantem,

this is VERY positive.

Like jeffweico says, you are simply being asked for ID to comply with the tax needs of the IRS.

Read carefully what jeffweico advised.

These are the steps needed to sort your issue.

Good Luck

So your SS and real name have never been linked with Paypal? If you have your account under a business name, not your real name, and you get an EIN under your real name then there will come a time when the IRS will tell PayPal that the two don't match up and the account will get limited. I'm dealing with this right now.
Opened a new PP and ebay acct with false info using newly acquired EIN under my real name. Filed all my taxes from the 1099 issued under that EIN. It took them over 5 years, but they (PayPal) are now forcing me to add the real name given for that EIN so that it matches the IRS records. They are also requiring the SS for that real name, even though I can provide them a copy of my Schedule C which clearly shows that the EIN is assigned to my name.
Still waiting to see how all this comes out...did get them to lift the restriction they imposed last night so I an transfer funds out of the account into my bank again after a short restriction last night.
Good luck OP.

I sold around 200 transactions on eBay. But just over $200 total. Got the same email like the OP

Question is will I get limit of not provide SSN?
Will it reset next year?

I thought only when you meet both 200 transactions and $20,000

Thank you

I've seen other members many times say it's actually both. It clearly is confusing and not hard numbers to follow, PayPal can request it at any time they choose.

the 1099K is for both. Paypal will request at either-or depending on a few factors.

@Trosky....Well, those other members are just plain wrong, it is which ever comes first. I spread my sales over enough accounts, where i don't ever come close to that.

The IRS law for all Payment processors is you need to go over BOTH 200 items and $20K and if you go over BOTH you will than receive a 1099 for the year

Now PayPal is separate from the IRS, they just need to follow there guidelines just like every other processor , and each company will request a tax ID at there own discretion

Amazon will ask for a tax ID at 50 items or when creating a pro merchant account

As of now paypal asks for a Tax id when you are on Pace to go over the threshold for the year

But just because you are asked to provide a tax ID doesn't mean that u will get a 1099 at the end of the year , only accounts that go over BOTH WILL get one

^^ Very good explanation thanks! Now I've seen some use the strategy of selling all they want and STOP as soon as they're asked for EIN and since they haven't reached those thresholds they don't get the 1099 and wait until the next year and start selling again once PayPal don't require the EIN anymore. Is that still a viable strategy?

How does the 'reset' work? My PP is limited because my EIN didn't match. Had around 250 transactions and 30K last year. Will my account be reset and therefore de-limited next year (this year I had under 200 transactions)? The limit says I can buy/send/withdraw but not receive so eBay blocked my listings for lack of 'working payment method' until I submit the info to PP or enter merchant processor info.

I dont use real first name in my Paypal account. Can I still apply your method?
