Tony this is to do with GST/VAT on selling fees. If you enter a GST/VAT number this will reduce the price. This is also charged on your self fulfilled merchant fees if you have not noticed. If you sell in UK as a US citizen/company they will not charge this and visa versa.
if you are selling cheap items FBA fee is usually higher, as you go up in price the advantage takes over and even more so for weight.
with the fba calculator u have to include ALL your cost, packaging materials (envelope/box, shipping label), gas to drop that stuff off, tape, time to package it. in the end FBA is usually cheaper

GameFreak,
I'm just compare between the real fee in my seller center and with the FBA Calculator page. Not with fulfillment by myself
Micky,
I don't think Amazon collect on your behalf. I check all the items that FBA from other seller and none of them collect tax except for Amazon themself
Tony, I had this issue and it was to do with tax. BEST THING is ask customer service via e mail and they will explain the difference as there should be none.
Micky, no need to contact them. I just use the FBA Calculator on the new product I want to sale to see how much profit it is. I set my profit should be $20-$30 each so just $1-$2 off it's no problem.
