Books are safe. The only thing to be careful of is to not overstate the condition of a used book. Fifty percent of my profits come from rare books. The profit margins are awesome. It is slow to start, however, since you have to build your inventory.
But, yes, you can re-sell a book that you find at a big box store. Just make sure the popularity is decent so it does not sit on your shelf for 2 years. Check the Amazon sales rank to make sure it is not 1,272,435 in popularity.
Since books have not YET been heavily counterfeited, there are usually no issues in selling them, except for international editions of textbooks.
