Verify your Google voice forwarding phone

I got the following message below from Google Voice but I have my calls forwarding to Google chat instead of my phone.

Is there anything else I will need to do or not? Am I ok with continuing to forward to Google chat? Thank you in advance..

Can't verify. I don't actually have the phone in my possession. Now what?

Get an app based phone number (talkatone or any such app) and get a free phone number and have it forwarded to that.

I went ahead and added a new virtual number to my Google voice account and verified it. Should I go ahead and delete the previous number that I cannot use to verify or should I keep it?
