Default Straight Talk Tethering

So, I switched phone providers to get a new set of IP addresses when tethering. I had Cricket, which is a monthly, unlimited, no contract service. I switched to Straight Talk service, which is the same. Crazy, cause I only get 10 IP Addresses. They are all the same number, but each one ends with either .1 or .2 or .3, etc going up to .10. This is actually cool as long as I only have 10 accounts and I know that no one else is getting the same numbers. Just thought I would share this info and ask if anyone knows about the use of IP Addresses. If I am the only one that gets these numbers, then it is ok, cause I have assigned each account one IP. Any input?

You probably have a lease on those IP for certain amount of time. There are ways to renew lease (or let go), but not familiar with phones.. But might be search worthy start.

Not jail broken, not rooted, not a small town at all. When I had Cricket, it had around 150 IP addresses that it skipped through. I did get to where I didn't ever hit any new IP Addresses, therefore I couldn't open any new accounts and had trouble getting into the accounts that I wanted. This is why I switched. It's actually not too bad with this, as long as no one else is getting the same 10 IPs.

So, how are you doing it then? Straight Talk TOS strictly states it is not allowed.

On iPhone 6+ you don't even need the phone Jailbroken to tether, perhaps other phones have the ability to Tether without having to root or jailbreak.

I have a phone with the option of tethering or hotspot from the factory. Use prepaid ATT and have 200+ different ip addresses (they allow hotspot/tethering on their prepaid service also). Straight talk will cut your service if they suspect it being used for hotspot ect.
And I do live in a small town....

How many carriers have you tested that with?

Wait, I'm lost. Why wouldn't I be able to tether from my phone on Straight Talk? And why would you have to do anything special too get it to tether? I didn't know that there were any phones that you couldn't tether with

It depends on what the companies terms are, someone mentioned that Straight Talk no longer allow your phone to be used as a hotspot or tethering.

Some companies have a small charge if u would like to activate the hotspot feature and share your data, I think boost mobile may charge like $10 or $15 extra a month to be able to use your phone as a hotspot.

Perhaps there is a bit of confusion here in regards to the term "tether"...because all phones definitely cannot. And it is up to the carrier to even allow it.

I've never had a (smart) phone that didn't have a tethering feature, so that's all I can speak on. And that's crazy that they say that you aren't allowed to do something that is a basic feature of a cell phone. That blows my mind. If you buy a phone, then I don't see how or why they would say that you can't use one of it's features.

Sure, many phones have the feature built-in the software. That does not mean you can use it for free. For example, iPads can tether, but only if you pay extra for it. I can't do it for free just because iOS has the capability.

All phones have the capability to make calls in other countries, but that doesn't mean you can just turn on any phone with any carrier and start making free international calls. You have to call you carrier and pay for the feature. So yes, carriers can block a lot of things at their own discretion.

Only thing I can add is that I know more carriers are bundling the feature with certain plans. I know Verizon does this a lot with both prepaid and postpaid.

Yes, but if you have to pay extra for certain types of calls, then you will be charged extra. But, I've just never heard of having to pay extra for tethering your own data. It uses your data. If you have unlimited data, then you should be able to use it. If you don't have international calling then you wouldn't be able to make international calls. But, tethering is a built in feature on the phone. It is not blocked. I've just never heard of a company saying that you can't do this
