Default Request for US Tax Information 1099-K Form

Paypal requesting tax ID info to be provided. Probably had 120/2800 in the last 3 months. Is the account done or can I just slow sales done and wait til the end of the fiscal year. It's a US paypal account but I don't live in the US.

I am also wondering if I can just ignored it and as long as I don't hit the 200/20000, it will reset next year. Or will it eventually be limited if I just ignore it.

Anyone tried not selling and seeing if it goes away when the next fiscal year resets?

Thanks rsot. So do you recommend that I stop selling right now and hopefully it won't get limited by next year where it resets and will stop asking for the SSN? Or do you think the correlation between selling and them asking for SSN again is not correlated?

I was wondering the same thing, I stopped selling and Im going to wait it out for that account and see if it resets. Two more months left of the year, so no big deal if its a good account. Too bad right before the Holiday though. Dont want to get it suspended. I have been getting the message for maybe 3 weeks now.

I am only one week through. I think heard someone say it might reset and just go away. Let's hope both our accounts make it there.

I am going to keep selling for the time being though.

The sale count resets annually right around the time Paypal sends 1099's out. So around February of 2017 the request for tax info will disappear, until you start approaching 200 sales again in 2017.

I see. I just got my 2nd reminder now. Do you think I should just cease selling and try to see if I could wait it out to Feb? Or do you think whether or not you are still selling has no correlation to you getting a third reminder?

I got the third reminder and now my account is limited. Does anyone know if the limitation will be removed if I wait until next year or is the account done?

Guy above me, it will reset next year. OP, if you continue to sell the 3rd reminder you get will be the limitation notice referenced by reaction.

Thanks phaz0rz for the replies. You think after you get limited. Will the SSN request disappear next year when it resets? Also, I suppose it's not guarantee that the 3rd request will be prevented if I stop selling but it's a higher chance, I suppose is what you mean right?

Yes, the SSN request will go away. I'm not 100% certain if it goes away when you let your account get fully limited (like reaction has done) because I've never let one of my accounts go that far. I usually sell until I get the 2nd request, then either add an EIN or just let the account sit until next year.

If you stop selling now you won't get the 3rd request, because each of the requests are triggered when your sales volume passes a certain predefined threshold. For example: 1st request at 150 sales, 2nd request at 180 sales, 3rd request (limited from receiving payments) at 200 sales.

They are obligated to have your tax ID on file if you pass 200 sales, so if you reach 200 sales without giving them a Tax ID then you are limited from receiving more payments until you do.

Wow that was really really useful, thanks for that. I am going to stop selling now then. It sucks though because I sell really low priced item in large volume. So I suppose I'll get that request really early every year.

I'm in the same boat, which is why I have 3 accounts with Tax IDs. Our busiest account easily passes 200 sales per day. I sell cheap, high-volume stuff on business accounts then I have 16 or 17 accounts without tax IDs which I sell expensive items on throughout the year.

You may want to consider looking into getting an ITIN from the IRS, or maybe using an account from a country which doesn't require a Tax ID.

I have just started to get like an UK account but it's going to take months to ramp up a new account to anything meaningful.

Very true unfortunately :/

I wish you the best either way. It's a painstaking process but it's worth the hassle in the long run to have redundant accounts.
