i always keep mine active just incase ,i bought some 0.99p sim cards which included £5 in credit so as long as i remember to send a text every few months i can keep them active for years at no extra cost.
I only have 10 accounts though so not that practical for people running a lot more and im sure their are better ways but it works fine for me  .
