Default How are profits and margins on Etsy?

Hello

I'm mostly an eBay seller... my stuff isn't unique enough to sell on Etsy yet. Although I would like to at some point when I start making some custom craft stuff . (not a stealth account or anything like that).

My question is this... is Etsy really profitable for you guys in the same way that Amazon is? I remember reading a newspaper article that gushed about the leading seller on Etsy... and she was barely cracking 1m a year ("barely 1 m").

I know 1m is alot, relatively speaking, but compared to the ceiling on eBay it seems lower. So my question remains... how is Etsy for you guys? Are the profits good? How about the margins?

you act like you could do 1mm in sales no problem already so why not test it out?

For me I can make an etsy account and within a few days I am back up and running as I would be with an account that is a year old. I find that eBay is slow with sales in the beginning and takes months to build up. I make a lot more on etsy but it will definitely depend on the items you sell.

Higher than e8ay because e*sy people are willing to pay for shipping.

what sort of goods was the leading seller doing? try copying, I suppose......
personally I do not have the time for etsy....it seems slow from the look of the feedback for most sellers.....but if you product is exceptional or you are on a popularity roll then maybe - some outside marketing driving traffic in would not hurt....

If you know etsy SEO, use their ads right, you're up running and profitable within days.

My items range from $12-38 and shipping is about $10 on average...etsy buyers don't mind paying for shipping, it's crazy. I'll sell a $12 thing and it'll have $12 shipping costs and it only cost me $9 and 30 seconds to fullfill. So I'll make $15 on a $12 sale.

Why wouldn't I stick around for that?

Yeah I agree with this, on eBay no one wants to pay shipping on anything but on etsy customers dont seem to mind at all. Most of my sales are overseas and none of the customers seem to mind paying the high international shipping cost - I actually price the shipping costs more than it actually costs and make a few extra £ on every item. its great!

^ check her out. Pretty cool, and while I like her b-model, I don't think I'd be able to embark on that sort of endeavor at the moment. I was just asking from a general standpoint.

At some point Im pretty sure she was suspended by etsy... lol, of course

For me et.sy and eb.ay are two different markets, but neither one gives more sales than the other, the sales trends are just different.

What I can't seem to shift on eb.ay will sell like hot cakes on et.sy, and yet I'll have items I can't seem to sell on et.sy that I make a killing on eb.ay for.

But what I like about et.sy, is that the customers are nicer. And seller performance is not as difficult to manage. I have to send all of my eb.ay items tracked so that customers don't lie and say their item arrived late, where as there is no late delivery report with et.sy so it all goes out on normal post.

On the other hand though I've had two et.sy accounts closed, but I still have my original eb.ay account. It seems competitors have a much easier time making life difficult for you on et,sy than on eb.ay.
