Default Microsoft Tech Support Scam - Help!?

My son fell for the Microsoft Tech Support Scam on my laptop, he thought he downloaded a virus on my laptop so he freaked and let them take remote access of it to remove the virus. He said a screen popped up with their tech support number so he called it. When I found out I did a system restore to a previous point, I then scanned for viruses & malware. Nothing popped up, I'm kind of a newbie with computers, should I reinstall windows on it? And I didn't have anything important saved on this PC, I did have it logged into Credit Karma. Can they possibly steal my information this way? And my last question, I do have important documents on my main desktop PC. Is there anyway they can access it over my WiFi?

Any advise will be helpful! Thanks!

You have done the right things, but there could be a virus on it silently, maybe others will recommend some good cleaners...suppose you tried malwarebytes? keep an eye on your credit, maybe get some credit agency checks for a while. If it was me, I would use this laptop for a spare or just browsing, or give it to a kid in the family to play on....see it as a good time to upgrade yourself...

they called me on my cell once too, but I just asked stupid questions, like what is windows, do you mean like a window on the house, until they hung up...

don't they get you to download a virus and then try and extort money out of you to remove it?

I doubt they can get on to your wifi network, without being connected on it, they would need to be close by and have the password...in any case wifi even in the same house does not mean you can get docs from a desktop, without physical access to that desktop or a connection like eg. teamviewer...

kids and old people need to know about these scams....
