My wife was messaging this friend for awhile and were chatting on Facebook, the friend was in a terrible state with her husband losing his job. They were struggling to pay their mortgage and were worried the house would be repossessed. My wife offered to give them nearly six months worth of mortgage payments to help them out, this was all agreed using Facebook. My wife and I agreed to send them £1,500 using Paypal friends and family to help them out with the mortgage, everything was agreed using Facebook, loads of messages confirming what the payment was for. Anyway, we sent the payment and a year on this couple refuse to pay up. We agreed that they would reimburse us when they got sorted but he's not looking for work and she's working part-time. My wife went to there home the other day to abuse from both of them, they said nothing could be done. When we threatened them with the Police they said 'Over a Paypal matter. good luck' and slammed the door in our face... Do we have anyway of getting our money back. | I agree with a lot of what others have said. PayPal is unlikely to take your side, this is more a matter for a small claims court. If you feel they do have the means to pay it back but aren't doing so, then I'd pursue it further.
My only concern is you may not have much success. Whilst you have everything in writing, what you don't seem to have stipulated is a term for repayment. Things like "repayment when they sort their life out" can be loosely interpreted, and as a plaintiff you may not have much grounds for a repayment. In future, always state a term for repayment, i.e. within 12 months.
I'd speak to a lawyer for more advice. An official letter from your solicitor, delivered by post, may help push things along with repayment without having to pursue it further.
