Default Why Amazon is Worth $1 Trillion

Really interesting. Esp Amazon creating its own shipping company. Imagine being able to control your own shipping expenses

I guess they're still at the mercy of fuel costs, but yeah that gives them tons of flexibility. Not only can they deliver their own shipments when it's cheapest, they can use their shipping company as a way to threaten the couriers they've always done business with.

"Give us steeper discounts or we'll just use our own service"

They are worth 1 trillion because of their stock price. The stock price is what it is because there are people willing to invest their money in the company. As soon as people start realizing that Amazon is not that worthy of their money, they will start pulling out and seeking new investments and that will lead to Amazon's stock price going down.

Jeff Bezos is not really worth 180 billion dollars. This net worth is theoretical. If Amazon's stock price is slashed by 50%, Jeff's net worth will also be. This also applies to Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg or any owner of a publicly traded company (supposing they're fully invested in their own company). The Koch industries for example is a privately held company, the Koch brothers are seriously wealthy and exert excessive amounts of political power as well, Jeff Bezos could only dream of being that much wealthy and powerful, but that may change in the future... who knows!

Having a major company and holding it privately is a way better option than making it publicly traded, but there are very few people who could pull this off.

I was reading a few weeks ago that Apple being valuated at $1t is a lot more accurate than Amazon being valuated at $1t. Apple has roughly 3x as much cash on hand as Amazon yet the two companies were both recently valuated at $1t. The speculative aspects get confusing..

With that being said Amazon is growing at an unprecedented pace and is dominating new sectors every week. So I can almost understand the investor confidence.

All things considered AMZ has grown substantially. Microsoft/Apple were founded in the 70's. 35yrs of growth AMZ did in 15.

I was thinking about what a private AMZ shipping company would do to USPS. Stamps.com stock plummeted when they announced USPS contract termination to create new future opportunities - can only imagine that's going to be with fedex or UPS.

Really only think it's going to get worse for USPS in the future. Which is bad, because a lot of ecommerce sellers rely on "cheap" 4-16oz rates.

Only thing that came to mind was natural resources and/or owning highly valued research and development patents.

Selling oil or arms would want political influence.

And, PFFT! Koch sells petroleum

Don't underestimate Jeff Bezos though, the man pushed IBM and Oracle out of lucrative contracts with the US government, those two companies are even complaining of the government favoring Amazon.

Jeff used the Amazon marketplace to create this gigantic brand and then expanded it into many different venues that have proven profits.

Apple used to have a huge marketshare for a product that everyone will buy for decades to come, but that is changing rapidly in Europe. Few days ago I searched eBay for a couple hours trying to figure out what smartphones people are buying nowadays and I was shocked that Huawei is selling a ton of units in Germany. It is literally eating up Apple sales over here!

3mo after I started selling on Ebay I thought man, they must have so much data on what people buy and when. But they dont do anything with it. If I had all that data, I'd do exactly what AMZ is doing.

But now iirc it wasn't until Nov 2016 when Ebay pushed product identifiers on sellers. So maybe they weren't collecting any real usable data. Pretty sure they tried selling that it would 'rank you higher' and 'make it easier for people searching by identifiers'. But who really searches by product identifier numbers.
