Default When should you consider doing eBay full time?

Hi everyone,

Just wondering when is it a good time to do eBay full time?

I’m working for a company atm I earn £1600 a month. I’ve only just got back on eBay and I’m already earning around £800 extra a month from that.

So when is it a good time to go eBay full time?

Looking forward to your replies.

If you have a full time job which pays you on a regular basis,I would not quit to do Ebay full time.
Do it after work,on weekend

It depends on OP-HOW OLd is she, what kind of job is she holding now?
Does she have opportunity to move up to a better paying position, learn good skills, gain friends and influence people.
Is there any pension plan,401K,IRA?
bonus,paid holiday,vacation and sick pay?over time pay?
if you are single, would you like to meet someone eligible to marry or share your life?
As an entrepreuner, you are on your own,no one is going to pay you when you are sick, overtime or send you to school to learn a new skill, you buy the furniture, the camera, the PC,laptops, smart phones, scanner, batteries, everything.
No janitor is going to come after work to clean your desk and empty your waste basket.
Light bulb burns out.A/C not working,no toilet paper in the bathroom,?
Some folks love it ,being your own boss, but miss steady paychecks which do not bounce and heath insurance for peace of mind.

thats not much, wont last too long

if you still have a job, hold on to it,you can always jump in and out of fleabay, but YOU cant jump in and out of a regular job, unless there are reasons you are not telling us.
if you do ebay after work till midnight and Sunday and Saturday, isnt that plenty?

Well, if you left your job then you would be more concentrated on Ebay and thus your earnings shoud go up.

is that a fact??

the sad part about doing Ebay full time or part time is that if you have a housefull of antiques, collectibles, out of production merchandise and do well, once they are sold, you wil be like the rest ,looking for suppliers for saleable items and many sellers have already beaten you to Aliexpress,Alibaba,ETC.
Your supplier is also selling on Ebay or some kid in the family is trying out for fun and be happy to make 25 cents per item while you are trying to make enough to pay rent, food, health insurance.car insurance.utilities.

I have been tutoring one of my granddaughters and after 3 months she now has a carreer - she is an internet trader

Because you appear to be incapable of finding your way through please do not assume everyone else is in the same mindset as you

Research, research and then research some more
Please stop ACTING LIKE A SELF RIGHTEOUS IDIOT !
I have already made my millions, while you are changing your grand daughter diapers, pathetic fool

I dont need to research, only retarded, inept, incompetent fools do so.
I have all my suppliers eating out of my palm, except I dont need them anymore, names you have heard of but cannot afford.

thanks,I am clever and successful, but I am not your bunny, you know what a bunny means in Northen China?
a faggot.
For those of you doing Ai this and Ali that, look in your own backyard, thats where my millions come from.
Now aint that a nice tip worth millions !

In the early days of Ebay, anything every thing sells, listing fee is a nickel, many dont have camera or scanner, just describe the color, one can bid on one's auction, buyers see all these items they have to go to different stores to find them, some are not available in the local market, they will even set up the alarm clock and bid at midnight or early in the morning.
A 75 cents gemstone pendant can go for $80,because the color is green>
A brass Egyptian cat figurine I found in the driveway left behind by my neighbor who just moved out ended up $38 after a fierce bidding battle?
High bidders will tell the seller how hard he fought and won the item?
They sent money order, postal order, cash, personal check, there is no paypal or credit card and no tracking,USPS has not come up with such.
Anyone can leave you feedback, they dont have to buy from you to be able to do so.

Folks will list at night and brought down Pierre's PC server in his apartment/
Gradually more people heard of Ebay and they all want to sell, who does not want to make a 500% profit?
Some quiited their day job and spend their mom's SS checks to hunt for old stuff in garage sale and thrift shops.
Some write books and claimed to have retired on the beach.
But anyone who has studied economics 101 knows supply and demand kicks in and prices start dropping,Ebay starts raising fees.

Then comes Billpoint and Paypal, and many buyers with drawer full of junks decide to sell them back on Ebay, there are only 3 kinds of players-buyer,seller and reseller.
There are also sellers who sell subscriptions -stories of their paranormal experience, encounter of the third kind ,fortune telling, cards reading.
AT FIRST It looks like quitting your lousy day job and do Ebay makes a lot of sense, but as time goes on,buyers are tapped out,and becomes your competitor, more retail stores are now selling on Ebay and they have the advantage of buying wholesale and selling at auction price, even your wholesalers are selling, there is no way one can compete against your wholesaler .
Sellers try to cut out Ebay, they would set a high reserve and when reserve not met, they will sell to buyers without paying FVF.
Back then FVF is only on item not shipping so sellers will list item at one penny and charge 99 dollars on shippin, then Ebay has to change and charge FVF on both.
There is no way you can make a living sellin in a flea market environment and expect to meet rent, car payment, grocery and like one point out health insurance.
Those who can are rare, and there is no guarantee it can continue.
As for one who moves overseas ,earn hard currencies and live in a foreign country with lower cost of living, not everyone want to move to a foreign country, they like to stay where they are.
You have been given some good advices, before you quit, ask yourself if there is no gold at the end of the Ebay rainbow, can you get your old job back?

Thanks for the replies.

What about if I was earning £2000-£3000 a month consistently on eBay. Would you or anyone recommend me to start thinking about going full time if I was earning that much?

When you're doing double what you make at your job consistently for about 2-3 months and your job is getting in the way of you making more money

It is hard to forus on business if you have a job.
My suggestion is to figure out if you really want to bust your ass at least 5x harder than you work for someone else. If the answer is yes, figure out if you have the dedication and discipline to do that. If the answer is yes again, the moment that you are financially comfortable not having said job, then make the final decision.

Very good advice. When your job is getting in the way of earning more money, it becomes a liability. Jobs are there for people to earn money, not cost people money and opportunity.
I would add that now is the time to bust your butt and do both until you are exhausted for as long as you can. Earnings from your job plus Ebay earnings will allow you to increase inventory, supplies and cash on hand (working capital), which makes the transition into full time Ebay easier with less worries.

If you're still around, OP, my recommendation would be to build up multiple selling accounts before pulling the plug on your day job. Otherwise a suspension could leave you totally without income one day.

It really depends on your situation and who you are. I for one could never work a job as i always been a entrepreneur. So you gotta figure out how bad do you want it and how dedicated to it you will be. Dont be afraid to fail and realize you could always get another job if it doesnt work out

When I started making that kind of money with Ebay in 2007, I decided to quit my job in London and move overseas where everything was multiple times cheaper and life was a lot better. In London I had to work very hard to even be able to save money, these days my expenditure is a relatively small percentage of my net income.

Now in 2020 i'm still going, I doubt I will ever have to work in a job, if something happens with Ebay then I have acquired plenty of business knowledge to be successful in something else.

PLEASE PLEASE BUILD MULTIPLE ACCOUNTS OP!

I was banned the other day on my main account (which brought in 13k sales per month and a decent profit). I got too comfortable with it then suddenly got the MC011 cxnt limitation. We sell phones with Apple and had a contract with them which eBay couldn’t acknowledge, alongside 5000 seller feedback. Before you join eBay full time, just have some savings behind you in case it goes all wrong.

P.S as good as you are eBay, you unfortunately can’t destroy the bigger man which is eBay, unless you have multiple accounts to fall back on. I’m not trying to scare you buddy, just the harsh reality these days from the fxckers.

^^That, 1000%. I quit my day job before discovering stealth/multiple accounts and almost had to go back to work after I lost my first account, because it took a good 3 months to get back to where I was on my first account with a stealth account.

Phaz0rz, I’m struggling for motivation right now after my main went down aha. How the hell do you find it after such a calamity :(

Bear in mind I’m stuck with a tonne of stock now so my guesses are it’s impossible to sell all within a short space of time (majority are iPhones).

If your job provides you with holiday pay, health insurance benefits and retirement, you need to think really hard on the idea to quit. Employer provided benefits have value upon itself, remember that. Health insurance is expensive if you need to pay for coverage yourself. In this environment, your JOB could get downsized at any time, so I would suggest using ebay as a backup plan, a savings plan. Once you have saved 8-12 months of salary, you can consider going to ebay full time. Perhaps then consider working part time just for the benefits. No matter what, you need to always keep 6 months of salary in an emergency account. Also, don't throw all your hopes on the ebay marketplace, multiple accounts, multiple income streams, multiple markets will provide you with income during these uncertain times.

Haha, it was desperation I guess. I was in the same boat except it was about $20k worth of accessories. I didn't like the idea of letting my stock sit around forever and become outdated so I researched and did what was necessary to get back on.

It was nowhere near as difficult 6 or 7 years ago to jump back in with a new stealth and start building yourself back up. Circumstances are quite discouraging these days... so I feel your pain. :(

I’m currently working 40 hours a week and I’m only working on eBay for about 2 hours per day Monday to Friday.

It will be difficult to quit my job when I earn more on eBay as I enjoy socialising with people at work and eBay can be a lonely place working on your own but my goal for now is just to try and earn as much money as possible from eBay so if it does take up my time and my income is better than my job than I would have to really consider it then.
