Richard III's burial

Just caught a glimpse of the burial of Richard III, they were showing the arrival of his coffin in Leicester being lead by two riders on white horses bearing the colourful and traditional fabric cloths with probably Richards coat of arms on them, the riders themselves were clad in suits of armour.

We really do put on a good show with things like this, Leicester certainly were not going to let this funeral get away anywhere else. The team talking about it all on the television mentioned how York and even London would have attempted to have it in their cities. There are of course a sprinkling of Royals just arriving, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, and the Countess of Wessex, not the Earl by the look of it, mmn, coukd be comments about that later. TV had just said the Earl would be there as well.

There is a chap reading a eulogy just now wearing a hat that looks like it might be giving a nod back to the time Richard ruled in. Never realised until now that he was the last monarch to die in battle. They just said he had a son called Edward who died young. Earl of Wessex not bring there this morning stands out again with that.

The United Kingdom is a fantastic place to live.

It's just a shame so many residents seems to piss and moan about it so much and bring it down. Yes, that includes you, my ignorant sister living in Australia! Some of us like our home country and don't feel the need to slag it off.

History was my least favourite subject at school, but as I get older I'm finding it actually quite fascinating!

I was quite into history at school, but like everything else, it is only when we have left school and got on with really living and learning about life that we really appreciate what is important. I can remember as a teenager not taking things seriously enough at appropriate times, you are right of course Geegee, the UK is a brilliantly place to live. Our history is unique to us and is one thing that will always keep us in the worldwide public eye because of how well we can display it and bring it to life. I think we can be assured there will be a worldwide audience even for this funeral today, must admit am finding it difficult to drag myself away from it today.

Guess you could safely say that rsot, not particularly the royal scene, although I think living over here we have a kind of inbuilt interest in it to a certain extent, I do always check the news for the latest info every day several times.

As an American, I can tell you that I have the utmost respect for the Royal Family. Especially Queen Elizabeth.

I know that some say the Monarchy is an outdated institution and that family is just a bunch of spoiled people living off the taxpayers, but I think it is more than that.

First, many of them devote a considerable amount of their time and income to charities. Second, look at the Queen. This is a woman that never applied for her job, yet she does it very well and to the best of her ability. Even when she had a misstep or two, she still TRIED to do her best and EVERYBODY makes mistakes. She may live in a palace and have a few boatloads of money, but she is STILL only a human being.

Half of all marriages end in divorce, but somehow everyone expects every member of the Royal Family to get it right the first time? That is unrealistic. And most of us made mistakes as teenagers. But our mistakes were relatively private, where Prince Harry and Prince William made world news with THEIR mistakes. And they were the SAME MISTAKES that other teens make. Again, they are just human beings.

I think the continuation of the Monarchy adds to the history and mystique of Great Britain. Politics and times may change but there is some comfort, I believe, for the average person just knowing that SOME THINGS will remain the same. If you WERE to lose the Monarchy and Buckingham Palace were turned into just another government building, your tourist trade would undoubtedly suffer.

All very true jeffweico, there are quite a lot of UK residents away from London especially who are ambivalent to the Royal family, and after the Queen and Prince Philip have passed away there will undoubtedly be changes, the Queen and her advisors are wise enough to be well aware of that already.

But they are so much a part of the the history of this country that while they are still alive it is part of the great unknown what any of those future changes will be. Many believe Prince Charles should never be allowed to be King, that will be the first of the changes to be faced.

One big happy, oh no that's Kelly Brook isn't it, and SHE is getting slated right left and centre for it. The one with Liz Hurley in it hasn't been around long enough to get any feedback about it over here, is it any good rsot ?

Hey nice one unbakedmonkey, down in, or up in Essex (whichever way you look at it) your going to have more chance of seeing roaming royals doing their visits, here in the North West we see a royal visit once in a blue moon. Whenever there are any documentaries about the effects of royal visits there always seems to be a nightmare of backed up traffic waiting for the roadblocks to clear, at least we don't have any of that.

Cool that you were a bit awed by meeting the Queen when you did, even though like you say you wouldn't consider yourself to be a 'royal watcher'.

Ah good point - it is relatively new...UK production but only few episodes. I haven't watched it

yes, in the south east you see them more, but they are alot more protective nowadays, and they are around less, the queen used to wander around by herself in the grounds of the parks and castles, as someone I know asked her for directions. I saw Diana a few times in London. I have seen them at polo in recent years (shut it GB!) but otherwise they are nowhere other than on organised visits, and who would queue up just to see them.....they are really nothing special, apart from the queen, she really is history personified .....

I mean the royals going to this funeral, not sure if appropriate anyway, as not their family line, it would seem odd for them to attend, I think sophie went, but she is just a minor... has anyone seen 'the white queen' series? I enjoyed that and richard was great in that, showed how he got to where he did.....yes his wife and child died.....well practically everyone died young in those days anyway....

Yes can believe that, Liz Hurley is not exactly one of our best known actresses, she only became known for dating Hugh Grant when it comes down to it, and the safety pin dress she wore to one of their more famous dates where the media were guranteed to be in attendance of course.
