You would be surprised how far some catnip, toys and treats go. Every year, my family gives 100 lbs of catnip, GOOD catnip, from our inventory. Other people donate chew toys, milkbones, or whatever else they can. We buy small boxes for the cats too - cardboard one that become "their" space and makes them feel more comfortable, especially when they are adopted, because the box goes home with them and makes them feel more secure in their new environment. The company that sells those wanted like $8 per box. When I got done on the phone with them, they gave them to us for $2 each.
Our group donates all year, but Christmas time is special. We pull out all the stops and some of the kids of the parents involved in the group even give some of their Christmas cash. They can see firsthand that their $5 will buy like 30 meals. It teaches them the importance of not only thinking of yourself. I wish there was a group like this in EVERY city.
Doing something does not have to be big. Don't think that you can't make a difference because you are not wealthy. Everyone in our group is average, we don't have any millionaires funding us. We are just people who wanted to do something locally.
Yes, you SHOULD still get gifts for the people in your lives. But think of others too. Every year, there are people still hungry at Christmas. Kids with no toys under their trees. People without heat and electricity. Be thankful for what you have and don't be a part of the war on poor people. Because if I have learned anything in my life, it is this - nothing is permanent. One day you can be very comfortable financially and the next day you can be scrounging for pennies. Life throws us curve balls. You CAN get sick, or lose your job, or whatever. Don't think it cannot happen to you, because YES IT CAN!
OK... stepping off of the soapbox now...
