Hi guys, I sell in Europe with a VAT number, and as soon as I wanted to start selling something in Germany, I uploaded a few products (which never sold) and shortly afterward I received this message from eBay...
Dear (Name of my store), We work closely with the German tax authorities to ensure our sellers comply with VAT obligations. Your information, including your VAT number, does not match that held by the German tax authorities, as required by §22f UStG (German VAT Code).

For this reason, we have applied the following restrictions to your eBay account:

- You cannot create new listings on ebay.de
- You cannot create new listings that specify Germany as the location of the item
- All current or pending listings on ebay.de or that specify Germany as the location of the item have been removed
- All current listings on other eBay sites will not be displayed to buyers in Germany. Note: These restrictions do not apply to sales concluded outside of Germany.

To remove these restrictions, please send us your information, including your valid German VAT ID number, as required by Section 22f UStG. You are required to provide us with your German VAT ID number no later than July 1, 2021.

For more information, visit https://www.ebay.de/vat.
Thank you,

eBay

Please do not reply directly to this message as it was sent from an address that doesn't accept incoming emails. When I log in to my account from the German domain, I get no errors or problems (obviously, I immediately deleted the listings).

However, I've noticed that in my country, where I usually sell, my sales have dropped significantly, and I'm not sure if that's the case or if it's just a coincidence. How can I check this situation to see if I've been shadowbanned or not, and how can I resolve it in case i'am?

Hey guys,

Just a quick question.

How does eBay distinguish between a private or business seller?

I'm guessing private accounts are limited to selling household items or personal items?

You can't for example sell multiple Apple products or resell high valued items in larger quantities right as that would classify as business practice?

Just curious as private accounts have no selling fees, saving you a lot of money when you sell, but in my experience, if you generate good profit for eBay via FVF's, your stealth account will have a lesser chance of being banned, after all their bottom line is what matters the most.

Still curious to know how much you can get away with selling under a private account, without having to convert it to a business account :thumb:

Now ebay doesn't recognise me. wants me to verify via text to an old number.

Obviously my fault for not keeping phone no up to date.

I spoke to ebay on phone and they enabled email verification. I can do this and update my password but then when i login again it goes back to asking for a text to old number again. a doom loop.

1. now my account is inaccessible how can i close my listings? they're still selling
2. anything else worth trying?

Hey guys, I’m looking for an eBay insider or someone who knows a reliable one. I’m willing to pay a small fee for their contact information, as long as you can confirm they’re trustworthy and have some proof to back that up or whatever. I know that, of course, many of those who claim to be eBay insiders are scammers, but there are still some reliable ones out there. (This is obvious, partly because otherwise it wouldn’t explain how some ebay sellers are able to sell everything and anything in large volumes and they are still active after 10–15 years with the same accounts etc) Obviously, these are people who have contacts with insiders or, in any case, with people who work within eBay. Please let me know—no time-wasters, please. If you can help me out send me a DM. Thanks

Yesterday, I had a unique message sent on one of my auction listings. An apparent lawyer for the brand. I've seen people claim to be VERO agents in a message before, but this one takes the cake. The said council sent a message that simply said "Cease & Desist (company name) USA." The profile creation was on the same day, and the message was sent at 4 am PST. They even used a photo of the lawyer as the account picture, with "name.brand" as the account username. Now, if you simply reverse-search this, it goes straight to the real council for the brand on LinkedIn. I suspect this profile to be a competitor.

What do you guys think of this? I don't think REAL Council would contact someone for a brand with this verbiage, and they would also just go through VERO.

just got this letter from HMRC -

I'm assuming my best bet is to call them and say i just sold a bunch of personal items before at a loss when clearing or moving house and make some waffle story up?

and its better than ignoring it?

Started on ebay maybe 7/8 years ago and first few accounts where on all my legit details

Probably did 10/20/30k in sales - honestly cant even remember.

Those accounts got banned quickly, since then the last 5/6 years I have just been on fully stealth accounts. Only bank account on the eBay was my personal ones. So mismatched name obviously. Most of the banks where online banks like wise - stuff that doesnt show on credit report.

However multiple times i did have high st bank attached to the ebay - ebay was always full stealth so mismatched name for the bank.

Past year or so I have not been selling as have moved onto other things - the few accounts i have left are full stealth - inc NI and ID.

anyone been in this predicament ? what did you do?

since image not loading, here is the letter:

Dear Sir or Madam
You may owe tax on income from online marketplace sales
We're writing to you because you've made sales through an online marketplace. You may have to pay Income Tax on these sales.
We receive information about online marketplace sales, and compare it with what people have told us about their income. We want to give you the chance to bring your tax affairs up to date
What you need to do
1 Please check if you need to disclose any income you've made from online marketplaces. For help with this, go to GOV.UK and search 'check if you need to tell HMRC about your income from online platforms'.
2 If you do, please use our Digital Disclosure Service (DDS) to tell us. Go to GOV.UK and search 'tell HMRC about underpaid tax from previous years', then follow the instructions. You need to do this by 27 June 2026.
3 You'll then have 90 days to:
-
disclose any income you haven't told us about or correct previous amounts.
pay anything you owe.
We'll treat any disclosure you make as 'prompted'. This may affect the penalty you'll have to pay.
If you don't need to use the Digital Disclosure Service
Please tell us if you have a valid reason for not using the DDS. For example:
⚫ you've never been an online marketplace seller
⚫ you have no profit to pay tax on, as your expenses are more than your income
⚫ you only recently started making profits, and you'll include them on your next tax return you already include the income on your tax return.
You can either call us on 0300 123 0998, or email us at
cso.onshoredisclosures@hmrc.gov.uk
If you don't respond
If we later find you haven't declared the right amount of income or paid the right amount of tax, you may have to pay a higher penalty or face criminal investigation.
If you have an agent acting for you, you may want to show them this letter.
If you need to contact us, we may ask you for our reference number. Please have this ready.
Join the millions of taxpayers already using their Personal Tax Account to access a range of services. It takes just a few minutes to get started, go to www.gov.uk/personal-tax-account Or you can use the HMRC app.
To find out about the service and standard of behaviour you can expect from us, go to GOV.UK and search 'HMRC Charter'.

...

I've spent months now trying to tune "promoted listings" into something that gets me enough traffic without destroying my profit margin.

Recently I've started disabling "promoted listings general" because the recommended ad rate was creeping up towards 20%. They have no problem advising you to incrementally bump up the ad rate until you're taking a loss on every sale. A lot of sellers are being forced to eat the losses just to move inventory.

For a while I was using promoted general and advanced but with the recent changes to the pay per click model, it seems like eBay is charging for clicks even if the buyer doesn't purchase. It quickly became unfeasible for me to use both ad types. On a $30 order I would have $15 in promoted listings costs.. then I would still have to buy postage.

Promoted advanced gets the best search ranking. I've started using Promoted advanced (PPC) for faster moving items and promoted general for slower sellers. I have the per click rate capped around 25-30 cents because again with that.. eBay will allow you to compete against yourself.. advising you to raise your per click rate to a dollar or more (as high as you're willing to go, really). The marketing team at eBay seems to have gone with the same strategy as the rest of wall street - extract maximum profits at all costs.

Just curious how other are navigating this changing landscape, if there are any eBay sellers left here. :coffee:

I bought an Irobot duster on Ebay, seller describes it as used and working ,in original package and some of the accessories are still shrinkwrapped.
My old one is acting funny and I do not want the latest model,I learn the fancier it is,the faster it could fall apart,so this older model close to mine may be better/
When it arrived,it was in original package alright, but it was so filthy, hair everywhere, one is supposed to clean all the parts after using it,but it looks like the seller just picked it up from the floor and shipped it.
So besides filling INAD ,I also left a negative feedback describing the condition ,Ebay removed the feedback!
When I asked why,the answer is that Ebay does remove feedback depends on ???,but have no fear,it is still saved so Ebay can review it if needed.
i find it rather strange,I thought Ebay wants us to leave appropriate feedback, what is Ebay afraid of?
Also I have to wait 5 days to get a return label?
