An interesting look at the traffic reach of eBay alternatives.

I've seen a lot of posts over the past month, both here and elsewhere, saying that Bonanza is closer to eBay than any other marketplace. I did a bit of research through Alexa and found that Bonanza actually has less traffic than iOffer, for example ...and much less at that. I thought I'd share these results with you guys.

The below "traffic reach" is counted in percent, out of all internet users. For example, a 0,1% indicates that 0,1% of all internet users visit this website on a daily basis.

amazon.com - 5.28%
ebay.com - 2.5%
etsy.com - 0.456%
ioffer.com - 0.061%
ecrater.com - 0.028%
bonanza.com - 0.018%
artfire.com - 0.0099%
ebid.net - 0.0079%
rubylane.com - 0.0074%
webstore.com - 0.0028%
atomicmall.com - 0.0013%
addoway.com - 0.001%

Surprise surprise, Amazon has twice the traffic of eBay, while Etsy is in 3rd place, followed by iOffer and eCrater, then by Bonanza and all others.

I can't generate the same sales from amazon that I generate on ebay...crazy how that sometimes happens.

It may also depend on how "buy-happy" the traffic is. It doesn't help if 100 people see your item but nobody is interested in buying it. Amazon may have more viewers, but you may still have more sales elsewhere.

That's only relevant if you don't ship internationally, though. For me, I don't care if a seller is from the US, France or Australia. A sale is a sale.

eCrater is heavily integrated with google product search. It's no wonder why is does so well compared to other free market places. I had 30+ sells on that site and it blows eBid's traffic away by along shot.

Yes, that's me. Still working hard on it every day, it's taking longer than expected.

I think there is much to this than you posted. For example Visits by Country, Site Revenue, etc. I dont really use anything other than amazon and ebay, but for me personally, I get about 10 sales on Bonanza a day, and 20 a year on ioffer.

Yes of course and those are just basic statistics. I can move inventory at top dollar on ebay about every 3 weeks but on amazon it can take 3 months

I too wish we had better alternatives that provided the necessary traffic that could convert into sales. I own a website and have been running it for a few years, and would be more than happy to use it to offer a service like eBay and Amazon where sellers and buyers can engage in sales and trading (where I wouldn't charge a cent for these sales - I benefit from having more potential customers visiting my website) but the reason why I have not taken that route is simply because I don't know how many people would take that option when most prefer to use eBay or Amazon for their purchases.

Nowadays, other selling sites are more important to us..

Ebay has selling limits, Paypal can limit you and ask for tax ID, AMAZON can delete and take all your cash...

Yeah, that's pretty natural. Amazon has less power of converting traffic into real sales than eBay.
eBay initially has the wiser marketplace organization comparting to amazon. All items on amazon look so unattracktive to buyers, it's just a list of offers and it's pretty hard to indetify why you should buy from particular seller (esp if his price is higher). Items on eBay are very customized and you able to make a difference between offer at a glimpse. eBay strictly outlines powersellers and clearly demonstrates seller's feedback. Bidding system is much more important as well, as you can entrap the customer and make him bid again and again.
Though techically it's much easier to buy and sell on amazon rather than on eBay (payment provider is separated from the marketplace, you have to pay your fees separately, changing billing currency is a real pain in the ar*e, a lot of bugs and sh*tty performance of the site).

Precisely... and there is a VERY LARGE proportion of people just going to Amazon for the customer product reviews (IMO the best thing about the site) then making a decision based on that and going elsewhere to buy.

On the other hand, does anyone look at ebay product reviews...

You should not be surprises to see etsy right up there.

They are the only legit threat to ebay to come along ever in my opinion.

If you know the markets like I do and sell anything in the antiques and collectibles group for the time period I sell everything I can buy in then etsy is the way to go.

Hipsters, Gen Xers etc all are buying like crazy in one area and they are going to etsy in droves looking for this type of items.

Etsy offers many items from this time period and items that the largest group of buyers is going after.

I see them growing even more in time.

They started as a place to sell hand made items and expanded after they realized the market for the items above and have flourish with them.

They saw a niche market and moved on it.

Bonanza is not bad if u want 1 or 2 sales a year lol. For the fees its worth the extra work. I do not believe in their new advertising connection with google shopping as I have never seen one of my items there even with a premium %

I've only visited Ebay one time, about 7 years ago, lol.

I'm surpised Etsy was #3.
