Default Paypal have sent the debt collectors 'round.

I few months ago, my paypal account went to minus £130 ($260) because a cheating scoundrel on Ebay did a charge back on his credit card. (I think I posted about the situation, on this forum)

I stopped using that paypal account. I disconnected it from my bank account and even phoned my bank and told them not to allow paypal to ever delve into my account and try to get money.

The paypal account stood there at minus £130. I occasionally got an email from paypal saying that my account has fallen below zero and needs to be "immediately restored".

I ignored the emails.

Today I got a letter from debt collectors. Paypal have forwarded my details onto them and are demanding payment.

I'm absolutely furious. Someone is gonna pay for this, but it sure as hell isn't gonna be me. (Well I might have to pay it off to stop them repossessing our house, but I'm getting my revenge some way or another.)

Whatever else you do, do not take the risk of having your credit impaired. There are those here that will argue against this but my two pence worth anyhow.
Make an arrangement with them to pay the money off at say 10 quid a month as that is as much as you can afford. Pretend you care.

But, I would write letters, check with freebie help. Here in the USA we have our good old Us govt rep and sen. offices FULL of inturns, who LOVE this kind of "challange". I do live in a state capital, so they ALL have offices here which makes this a little easier. I also have TWO great Law Schools within 20 miles of my home and these guys REALLY love this stuff. We also have the "crazy" Phelps bunch, you know, the group who love picketing at schools ,funerals, etc, travel far and wide but they also have a great record on situations like this. They are all attorneys. I have a bunch of thier kids in my HS classes. really nice kids get good grades and get along with their peers. Only difference is they have to stand outside school at lunch with thier "God hates fags" signs at lunch, How did I get off on this? Just my opinion.

Kasabian, that's pretty disgusting. I've never heard of a case in the UK they have actually resorted to a debt collector for such a matter.

This is yet another reason for using ⊗⊗⊗⊗ details.

Sorry to hear about that mate, however, think yourself lucky. £130 isn't a lot of money, it could have been a LOT more.

as you have not borrowed or been credit checked prior this money owed does not have any impact whatsoever on 'credit rating' that is held with Experian/Equifax

They will try a variety of different supposed scare tactics to obatined monies owed

HI:
My first thought would be to have them verify the debt, what its for, item by item,
then, have them verify /Validate it is actually yours--they only have 30 days to do this-then it must be dropped. (if dealing with a cra/ca)..

depends what the amount is, if the amount is for £3000 +, you bet they will send them round! However if its just for a few hundred its not worth it. Also I am not sure if they can legally do it...... is Paypal a bank? Is eBay a bank? Did you sign a contract with eBay ? or Paypal? The answer is no, and someone else can use your details to make an account, how can ebay or paypal prove this? They cant!

Its different if you go into a bank and show your ID + statements + your face! eBay or Paypal dont even know what you look like or who you are basically, this I think is a loophole in there system and they know it.

I hope you get your revenge on PayPal for all of us. There are no words to describe how low they will go and they do it all behind friendly slogans and fancy websites; the truth is they are all crooks in business suits and whenever I have the chance to scam PayPal I take advantage of it!

Default No proof...

As a past collection agent in Canada I can let you know of a few secrets.

First, they do not have proof that you owe something. Say to the collection company that you need to see proof that you owe for a service or product for you have no record of the debt. If they say they do not have to prove anything then tell them you will go to the papers and complain to your member of parliament (government official). They will need to get proof of the service/product purchase with YOUR SIGNATURE on it. If it is just a paper return from your bank then just say "They tried to debit illegally from my bank and I refused it"

I now work with a bank and I know that if they (PP) receive a number of complaints they will be refused debit authority from the Payments Association (CPA or Canadian Payments Association here in Canada).

Remember, when the dog bites you should bite back by taking a bigger chunk then they did!

daowen,

And what if the debt collector looks up members of parliament / house of representatives and sees you're not a member? There's not that many.

Also, complaints where to? You mentioned complain to the collection agency then that's it.

Default To clarify things...

Do not represent yourself as a member of parliament. As stated, say you will complain to YOUR member of parliament.

Check your local government papers for a Collections Agency Act. Each province in Canada has one. It outlines what the collection companies can and cannot do. It also outlines a way of conduct.

Look it up and let me know. If you need, tell me the basic location you live in and I may be able to give a better related advise.

Regards,

Doug
