Default Anyone considering (or have) set up their own ecommerce site?

Semi-new to ebay, but getting the ban hammer dropped so soon on me so soon just discourages me to even think about using again (trying stealth account first). It's an awesome feeling when you list something and soon after, even minutes after people bid or buy it now (account is old, i had feedbacks but very few from selling old textbooks).

Now I know that right now no other site besides Amazon can compete with the traffic and exposure that eBay produces, but developing my own ecommerce site with my own "rules" so to speak sounds very intriguing.

Has anyone here rid themselves of eBay altogether and just stuck to plain old SEO and their own website? Just curious

Sure, that's actually where I started and then ventured onto eBay for extra sales.

Having your own website makes it a lot less stressful then having to rely on eBay for all your sales. Though as you mentioned eBay is a big marketplace and you would be a fool to ignore them.

Welcome to the forum.

Yeah I'm gonna start looking into getting a website, sounds like a bullett proof way to go along with your ebay accounts of course.

no fees, less exposure, be your own boss....

what's not to like? ebay is a household name at this point, but you'd be suprised about how much profit you'll take in on your own website. It's less sales, but take away paypal costs, ebay fees, insertion, fvf....... get a direct merchant. Google SEO... it's the way to go.

Your best bet is to utilize multiple payment options.

Use PayPal, Google Checkout, Authorize.Net, etc etc.

It also gives your customers more options, which is always good for conversions.

Smile new here / hi guys

new here [i know my post count is practically zero, but i'm becoming addicted to this place!]

i really want to learn more about how set-up my own website / store.

i am convinced that this is the best way to permanently get ebay out of my beeswax!

i've been trying to obtain as much info as possible about the entire process, and here are my burning questions so far:

1. what aspect of my website will help me record inventory, process, and ship orders? will i have to pay for this software once, or on a recurring basis?

2. in general, after the website is established, what are the recurring fees/ expenses one should expect to pay?

3. any literature / articles which will help to effectively explain the process of establishing a website / running an online store is appreciated.

I'm new here too but the best option I've come across to set up your own website is Webstarts. It's what I'm using to set mine up and it's EXTREMELY easy to use. While you can use HTML, you don't have to. They've made it so that even someone with very rudimentary computer skills can build a site. I believe they have instructional vids on youtube that you can watch if you want to check the system out first. It's how I stumbled onto them. Hope this helps!
(I am in no way affiliated with webstarts, nor do I make any money from them. I'm just a satisfied user of their services.)
