Default Decision made - I AM going to start my own website!

Madsam has been contemplating whether or not it's going to be worth it for some time - now I have decided the only way I'm going to find out is if I just go and do it.

I will first of all need to get a domain name and sign up for web hosting - if anyone can offer any advice for the best/cheapest/free ways and companies of going about this I'd be extremely grateful.

A lot of places offer a free website as a sub-domain - should I be for or against this?

You should buy the domain separately because if you decide you don't like the hosting you don't want your domain at jeopardy for switching to another host. Also a good way is to buy the domain at namescheap and host it with 000webhost.com its free and its a good way of setting up your website for free. So basically after you got it all designed and set up and happy with it you can transfer the host to host gator and start advertising. This way you don't pay for hosting you don't need in the "creation period"

Dont go for rock bottom cheap hosting. Some are so slow it will effect sales.

$15 or $20 a month is nothing when you consider its carrying your business. I have had some bad outages with cheap hosting in the past. Who knows what sales you lose when its having problems. I'm all about cutting corners and saving money. But host is important

And I agree with 123. Do your domain away from host. Best to keep them separate

I use namecheap to register all of my domains now. I've been using hostgator as well to host. It's good stuff. I love how namecheap doesn't try and charge you 1000 dollars if a domain is taken, they just tell you it's not available.

Yeah namecheap is a great site, cheap and simple interface. Also most the domains I've registered they had them ready instantly. Unlike 1&1 where I would wait days...

They do redirects as well, while you're setting up. Very, very convenient if you ask me...

You should use Godaddy for the domains, HostGator for the hosting, and CS-Cart for the shopping cart software. All three are top notch and excellent.

I hate go daddy for domains only because when you try and register a domain that someone has just bought and is sitting on they charge 5000 dollars instead of just telling you it's not available.

Host gator is SOLID if you get them on a cheap pricing week. I got my whole year paid for under 80 bucks! PRIVATE IP and all!

What is a class C ip address?

And where's Madsam? I still want to know if he had success.

Class C IP is a part of the 256 IP Block, you have A,B,C. I won't go into details but each one has it's own identity and security...so on and so forth.
