Default What are meta tags and how do I get them?

What are these met tags and do they come when you buy a domain name or do I have to put them somewhere in my website? I don't understand? don't I need these for searching my website?

meta tags are what the browser looks at to see what your site is about. they arent thaaat important, but you should have them on your site.
basically stick them into every page and put a description. heres a tutorial i found:

wow... just wow...

An example of meta tags is this:

<meta name="keywords" content="What, meta, tags, how,do,I,get, them,What are meta tags and how do I get them?, eBay, eBay suspensions, suspended eBay, eBay account, eBay" />
<meta name="description" content="What are these met tags and do they come when you buy a domain name or do I have to put them somewhere in my website? I don't understand? don't I need " />

If you view the source of this page, they're towards the top of the code. For this forum, they're auto generated.

They're not 100% necessary, but it can help sometimes. I don't use them on other sites of mine unless they auto populate like this forum does.

The most important tag you need to worry about is the TITLE tag. This defines your pages in search engines. It's good to have any keywords you're trying to rank for in the title.

I wouldn't get to hung up about meta tags. They really aren't hugely important.
Work on dense unique content, then your website will be a winner.

from what i know (correct me if im wrong) most important are the page title, the url of the page - like "some-good-keywords-here.html", lots of keywords inside the page itself and lots of backlinks using your main keywords, oh and links from "respectable" sites.

The most important things if you want a successful website:

- Backlinks from high pagerank sites
- Anchor text relevant to your website, or for keyword you want to rank high
- The use of h1, h2, h3 tags in your pages
- UNIQUE and RELEVANT content

You can use SEO'd url's, but they don't make a huge different. I actually found with one of my forums which has a few more backlinks with no SEO url's, it ranks higher than one of my others which itself has a VB SEO URL package installed. So, I don't think it makes a noticable difference.

As long as your URLS aren't filled with lots of dynamic characters, they'll rank in the search engines. Though it's good have to good keywords in your URLs, and why not make your pages easier to index by making them a little more search engine friendly as in this forum urls.

And yes title, unique content, good internal linking and lots of relevant back links are all very important.

They are yea. Each tag weights how important that text is. I ALWAYS put the main titles in H1, and then just style the H1 tags. You can make the H1 look like normal text if you wish. Then make subheadings H2, and sub sub headings H3. Try and get your keywords in each of your headings.

are words inside a "add to cart button" recognized as keywords in a search engine. like if i sell t-shirts and put "pirate skull t-shirt" in the button (so for example it will say "pirate skull t-shirt" on the invoice and i will know what to ship when i recieve payment) will "pirate skull be recognizes as a keyword?
is any and all text i write within my site recognized as keywords.. i just want to know where i should focus my descriptions at.

my website is brand spankin new so of course im not at the top of any search pages, much less the 50th page.. but even if i do a search for my domain name, nothing comes up... can anybody give me some pointers. i will do some advertising elswhere, but i thought if search "domainname" it would show up and it isnt. im with godaddy if that matters.
also, can someone tell me what h1, h2 and h3 are?

Urban Dictionary: Meta Tags

HTML commands that are placed in the head section of an HTML document. The meta tags that can affect search engine rankings are Meta Description and Meta Keywords to a lesser extent as Inktomi is currently the only search results provider that acknowledges using the keywords tag or meta data.

The Meta Tags are useful.

so you do you know if wording inside a html code for a "add to cart" button is recognized as a keyword within a search engine.. when someone searches?
Im talking about the title that will go on the invoice.. does the search engine recognize that as a keyword or phrase?
