Default Transitioning from eBay to own Website?

Have any of you found more success selling items on your own website, versus selling on eBay or Amazon?

I want to take the plunge, but I'm confused on what methods can drive REAL targeted traffic to the website. SEO doesn't really work like it used to.

Adwords? Newspaper ads? What REALLY works nowadays?

If you are selling iphone cases or common things forget about it. I have a niche market and make a significant amount on my own website.

Check out the google keyword tool. It can give you an idea of the niche you're exploring.

SEO is straightforward, but definitely more cost effective than ads if you can get to page one. It's certainly harder with higher competition.

You really can't go wrong with doing your website, because you're not paying ebay. You'll pay a small fee for payment processing... but... that's the cost of doing business.

Websites take time, whereas ebay/amazon are more catered to instant gratification.

You need to separate yourself from the rest of the competition, and/or have excellent marketing and appearance.

Always remember why we're paying high fees to ebay... their traffic.

It's tough to setup a website and sell as successfully. You can try Adwords but it will end up costing you more than ebay probably.

Good point, however, that's a broad category. I think I may have carved out a bit of a niche.

However, I still need to get to "page one" like the other guy said. That's my challenge.

No doubt about it. Not to mention there isn't a high conversion rate

Page One of Google does NOT guarantee success, fact.

There are many ways to drive traffic. Never rely on one form of traffic.

If this site is for the long term then you need to be a master at driving Traffic and then Converting traffic.

Some people are good at driving traffic but Suck at conversion. You need to learn how to do both.

It's called Marketing.

Only reason I like ebay is cause for .05 cents I can have an auction/ad run for 30 days! And get so many sales on it!

Having a website = building it, lots of works, then traffic, back links etc. Not to mention paying to get the views etc.

I did join a forum last year, I didn't last long on there, cause the guys were so boring! Some had links or a banner posted on a website for only $15 a year and would get a ton of traffic! And I was just thinking "great" but that site was so boring.

What really works is your own HARD WORK.

You have to put yourself out there and attract the business.

Actually, in my particular instance, IT DOES. Being on the first page is exactly what would generate a lot of sales for these particular items.

I'm not saying Page One isn't going to bring business. It's just that in a lot of cases, especially for niche products or local businesses they think that IF they get to Page One the money will come rolling in.

They spend time and money getting to page one, then nothing happens.

I know for a fact, been there, done that.

Hes right... organic page one doesn't always mean money train.

its a pay to play world, learn how much you can spend to make a sale.
