I invested £5k (using a practice account) on one commodity today, which within a mattter of a few hours turned into £9k. I was kicking myself for not putting real money down.
Having said that, yesterday was appalling, nearly everything was in constant decline.

Half the time its a guessing game
You can do all the analysis you want but often it just comes down to luck and investing in the right place at the right time

If you are going with Vanguard, look into the Vanguard 500 Index Fund. It tracks the S&P. The index fund wont bring you glamour but over the long run it tracks the S&P top 500 companies.
I've had since since I was 18(36 now), and it follows the stock market. I have most of my investment money in it.

The recent gains appear to be based on speculation rather than real figures. The fact that Trump is a business man is getting a lot of investors excited. The market is overdue for a crash so there may be one coming up soon.

I dont really follow or do research on stocks anymore like when I was a stock analyst. Those days are long gone for me, I put money into index funds and let them do their magic over the long run. Today the only thing i have is that index fund and BRK.B.

It is good to do a range of things investments-wise ......
make sure you use 200 day moving average, to avoid big drawdowns when the inevitable next big correction comes....

I once tried to invest a little and lost £2.8 in an afternoon. After that I realised that my monkey brain is not ready for that kind of stuff yet.
I'll give it few years and perhaps educate myself next time, before doing dumb **** like that.

There will always be luck. The market is volatile. An average year with a mixed stock portfolio should net you 5-7% returns. But if you had investments across the S&P 500, you would have netted 12% in 2016. http://www.cnbc.com/2017/01/04/most-...he-sp-500.html Quote:

The stocks that are making those go up so high, are typically the stocks that are already very expensive to get into.

I have no doubt it can go higher. But when the retail crowd starts getting into stocks is when I choose to exit. It is always the dumb money aka the retail crowd that ends up holding the bag.
As an Anarchist/Libertarian I tend to vote Republican even though I hate government. But if you look at market crashes in the US it tends to be when a Republican is in office and everyone is super optimistic about pro business policies giving each other high fives; which is exactly when the rug gets pulled out from under them. Just something to keep in mind.
I have stop losses on every stock I own. There is nothing wrong with taking a profit and having some funds on the sideline.
