Default Is this Powerseller trying to scam me?

Nine days ago a Powerseller won one of my auctions. They did not respond to any of my invoices, nor any follow up questions, all of which were super polite and accommodating.

Yesterday I made a claim in eBay's Resolution Center so I could get my FVFs back and the buyer responded inside the Resolution Center.

The Powerseller claimed his wife was fired from her job and requested a mutual withdrawal. My spider-sense told me that story was rubbish but I agreed and the case was closed.

Ten minutes later I receive an email from an unknown email address:

I accidently paid for this after we cancelled the transaction. Could you please refund my money. Thanks

WTF?! Who accidentally makes a payment after a cancellation? A Powerseller?

Of course, Paypal has a hold on his payment. Are refunds taken out of the hold amount? Or out of the available balance? I am concerned that this refund will be taken out of my available balance and Paypal will not release his funds that are on hold. He would totally double-up at my expense.

Any thoughts?

if its the 21 day hold, you can refund him and the funds that are on hold will be released

You should have given the buyer a strike. Then by ebay's policy because of how they responded to the dispute, you can get their neg off if they neg you.

Also explain that since May 2009, eBay no longer suspends for unpaid item strikes and buyers can just appeal them all and get them off for no reason.
