In people's experience, how big a payment can a Paypal account handle for a first payment without getting limited?

coins. Nearly literally. I get limited on a first sale on all accounts even on first transaction of 2 usd. Then getting lifted and all the rest transactions does not even matter - can be even a 1K and its still ok. However everything will go under hold of 21 day for a while.

a lot does depend on the item being sold as well as status of acct verification and form of payment from buyer - among other factors

On new accounts PayPal will do a 21 day payment hold on sales until a number of them has been done and they are happy the account poses no risk.

I also get a hold on each new paypal on the first sale. Any amount. I prefer it this way, get the verification out of the way at the start.
