Default Tax Number Association

Does anyone know if Amazon can check the details of your tax information (specifically HST/GST number in Canada) to see if that number is associated with the address/name on your Amazon account.

For example:

Account is in Person A's name
Tax ID number is for corporation B

Person A and Corporation B obviously have different address and personal information.

Can Amazon verify the address just based on the tax number alone? If it doesn't match will this create issues on an already verified account that has 1+ yr of selling history?

Can they check? Yes they could theoretically check by going to the Business Registration website (CRA) and seeing if numbers and name of business matches.

Will they? That's the question...since it involves inputting information manually and, if there is a mismatch, they could theoretically call the number provided and flag your account.

To me, it feels like a lot of work - AZ wouldn't see the true info if there is a mismatch but the mismatch itself could cause issues.

If you already have 1+ year of selling history, I would wager that they haven't caught on...

No I mean that the account is 1 year old. It currently doesn't have a tax number associated with it for sales tax collection.

If I was to add a number in now I am wondering how likely that account would be flagged/require reverification for now wanting to collect sales tax.

Also, if adding the number to the account, can Amazon see the mismatch between the tax ID belonging to a corporation at address X when the account is open under address Y.

Ah adding the number now...that I don't have experience with for a 100% statement.

Since you have been selling with success for 1+ year, why add it now?

Anyhow, a) It is possible that AZ might ask why you are adding the tax number only NOW after 1+ year of selling. b) I don't foresee that AZ will automatically see a mismatch - they would have to manually check with business CRA registration website etc.

CRA is requiring that I start collecting and remitting HST/GST for each of my accounts now that its over 30k (even though amazon has been collecting and remitting on my behalf, they don't like this and have said I need to directly).

I think it is very possible they will check or require a reverification if tax information on the account changes and then I will need to provide business or tax documentation if they do..

If CRA are requiring...then the situation is escalating. If AZ is now telling you to collect directly and submit to CRA, it is best you comply. Valid point...you might be getting asking for tax documentation...

Yeah, not a lot of options, its only CRA requiring, not from the AMZ end. but yeah, worried about documentation on the AMZ side matching up to the HST/GST registered addresses matching the AMZ account details.

I wouldnt worry too much about AZ actually - you're paying your fees and customers are happy...you aren't avoiding their stuff so least of your worries imho

A mismatch between the account holder and corporation could definitely trigger additional verification, especially if Amazon asks for tax information. The safest approach is to make sure the legal name and tax registration details match the entity actually receiving the income.
