It's a fairly simple process. What I do is first create a new VM, but choose to manually install the OS after creation of the VM. Once you create the VM, go into the settings -> CD/DVD -> Connection and choose "Use ISO image file". Select your windows xp .iso file, then click OK to save the changes.
You may need to go into the VM's BIOS on the first boot and change the device boot order, so it boots from the virtual CD drive first. Then when you turn on the VM the next time Windows XP installation automatically starts. Once you get to that point the Windows installation walks you through the rest, just like you were installing XP on an old computer.
